Talking What a mutt !!

As discussed in another thread here I slammed together a dedicated folder. I bought a mobile athlon xp and a NF7 with some ram and used a bunch of crap laying around. This bad boy does not even have a on/off switch . The Hard Drive is an old Quantum bigfoot 8 gig ata 33 , the CD drive has the door busted off and you have to help the tray out. The Heat sink is for a P4 ( had to do a little milling on it to get it to work ) A custom sheetmetal clamp and an old 46 cfm panflo. The vid card is a Diamond stealth 3D ( 4 or 8 meg ). With the top off it runs at 44C with it on at 48C ( Full load ). I am out of fans. I'll leave the top off ! It is running very stable at 2405mhz at 1.65 volts. And is turning in about 80 points a day. I was going to reformat the hard drive and load XP , I was not paying attention when I booted and the next thing I know it is loading Win 98. From the old machine it came out of. I let it go to see what would happen. It loaded a bunch of new drivers and went to the desktop. So I loaded the Abit stuff and it has been running fine. No yellow bangs in device manager or anything. It just goes to show that when it does not matter it works just fine. Now if I had needed to save that drives data......It never would have worked.
The power supply is a "Powerup" 350watt P4 rated. I know it is quite a sight but it is folding like mad. It will get put on a shelf in the store room so I do not have to look at it I will just watch the numbers grow on MBM on my main rig.

Thought you guys might get a kick out of it .

PS Dogsoldier......I am commin for ya dude....watch that mirror.

Thanks for the offer !! But I think I may dable in watercooling next. I will just leave the top off now. This setup runs so good I will likely even buy it a nice case. It will just have to wait a bit.
Has anybody used a Peltier cooled resivior ?

Yes it is a sickness....And I have it bad

That seems to be true about many things in life. For example, you never get the girl you want to fall in love with you, it's always her "plain" friend who just won't leave you alone. Murphy at work, I suppose.

Very creative Frankenbox you have there!

I am surprized that you bothered with a case.
What a pile. I love it.
I have a folder running the same video card, I have a spare one too.

A peltier on a reservoir would be very inefficient, it would be much better to use it on a waterblock such as Swiftech sells. I've done some peltier cooling and you are talking about a whole new level of watercooling when you talk peltier. You also have to worry about condensation on the proc/mobo/waterblock and also a pelt big enough to do you some good with an XP will have to be either 172 watt/24v or 225 watt/12 volt and you will need to have a dedicated psu just for the pelt for either of them because they draw so much current. Plus, you have to deal with not only the heat from the proc, but also the heat generated by the pelt itself, plus the heat of the psu required for the pelt. You end up dumping a hell of a lot of heat into the room you have this set up in.

In re the pics:

Scott, please do not run a HD with controller (green circuit board attached to HD) UP for a long time. The mech does radiate heat, and if you have the embedded controller circuit up , rising heat will heat it worse (and it will die faster) than what it gets with green circuit board DOWN. With HDs, green side DOWN, with grass, green side UP. EVEN with bigfeet. Trick is not to short or overheat controller with bigfeet, I hope it is screwed in place where you have it.

It's a Quantum, it'll never die :P

Also, if he's got one of the older hd's that go in cd-rom bays and is running the case on it's side he's perfectly fine as the hdd is in fact right side up.

The HD cemetery is full of old Bigfoot drives. I have one hanging on my wall. It was a customer's, not mine. I never owned one, nor did one ever me.

I pulled that bigfoot out of a Presario and it was in there green side up. And from the dates in the case it had been there since like "89". If I put it green side down then the IDE cable would have to be all twisted to get to the CD and the molex would be on the wrong side.

If you guys did not see the other thread "How long in Prime 95" Igot it up to 2505 mhz ! No smoke yet . I ran Prime 95 for an hour and just decided to start folding. Has been going for about 6-7 hours now. We'll see in the morning. I moved it to the store room and put it on the cold cement floor (basement ) and the temps dropped to 45C. Being a total noob to the world of OC ....It could not have gone better. Ignorance is bliss !
When I bumped it from 2404 to 2505 my frame times in FAH dropped about 15-20 seconds per percent.

Thanks guys

GREAT SCOTT! ..always wanted to say that..

I was thinking of goin AMD too but thought I'd stick with what I know (For the time being anyways) I picked up my new 2.4c today. I deepsixed the PT800 board for another P4P800, it was a bit more money but I saved at least that much by recycling my 2x256 3200 Crucial sticks 5:4. It's purring along at 3.06Ghz right now and chewing through a Tinker. Temps are 47/40. A bit high but well within nominal. This should hold off the 5 people I see behind me, at least til 2008.

You Dog ! just when I thought I could catch up !!!

I thought I would try the AMD route. But I'm still an "Intel" guy at heart. ( Ok that should ruffle a few feathers ) Bring it on.

If only p4's were the same price. I'd go for a p4HT anytime of day. Those things are incredible folders.

Bigfoot is the exception to the rule, it has a small controller and that controller belongs on TOP of drive when drive is mounted. It was one of the first higher capacity drives, used 5-1\4" platters inside.
