*sniff*, video card go melty melt :(

As the subject says, my trusty hard-modded Ti4600 which ive had forever ... finally ate it .. damn summer heatwaves ...

seems the fan just started losing it and while i slept it overheated

SIIIIGGGGGHHHHHHHH

oh well, I guess this is where I start actually reading the Video card forums ... Im assuming a 9700 or 9800 is the way to go ????

Incidentally... anyone wanna buy a heat twisted fan and partially scorched heatsink ...... heh

Sorry to hear about the Ti4600's untimely death.

If you've got lots of cash to burn, grab yourself the Radeon 9800 Pro ($456).

If you want to save a little, grab either a new Radeon 9700 Pro ($259), a used 9700 Pro ($200) or a new 9600 Pro ($179).

If you want to go the NVidia route, check out the 5900 Ultra ($419), or if you want to go a little cheaper, the 5600 Ultra ($151).

If your really lucky, you might be able to get a hold of a Radeon 9500 Pro, which will do you fine. Good luck finding one though...

You buy either of these cards and you will be very pissed off. The fx5600 is just like the ti4200 ONLY IT COSTS $100 MORE!! DANG!(according to newegg)

The 9600 pro is essentially a 9500 with a smaller micron process and downclocked.

If you could care less about dx9 go for a ti4800se. If you care about dx9 go for a radeon 9500 pro or a radeon 9700 np or pro.

I have a radeon 9700 np and all i had to do was flash the bios to get it to pro speeds. So i essentially saved $70, but if you dont want to take the risk go for the 9700 pro.

P.s. Whats your budget?

My appologies, Pricewatch lied to me. Turns out that $419 was for a NON-Ultra 5900 card that was listed in PriceWatch's "5900 Ultra" listings. Cheapest one on PriceWatch.com that I would trust is the $459.00 USD ProLink 256 MB FX5900 Ultra from NewEgg.com

With 4x FSAA and 4x Aniso, both the 5600 Ultra and the 9500 Pro are less than 10 FPS slower than the ti4200 is WITHOUT them.

Apparently Al believes featureless graphics is the only thing that matters.

Actually the 9600 is clocked higher but has half the pipelines.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like it's made by ATIVidia...

The best thing to do may be to get a cheap 128MB Ti4200, and wait till after Doom3 and Half Life 2's release. Or another Ti4600, if it's really that important to you.

Chances are there will be much better cards available by the time these games hit the shelves. They will be able to play these games better then anything available now.

I recall not too long ago replying with a quote from Dumb & Dumber, but I love the movie and sometimes it only takes a word or short phrase to make me think about it.

When you said 40hr work week, it made me think of the scene when Lloyd is coming home after falling from the jet way and meets Harry who is also coming home. Shortly after they get inside they hear a knock at the door and Lloyd believes it to be the gas man so the sneak out the back. Upon returning Harry says to Lloyd, "Man, I can't believe there's not a single job in the entire city," to which Llody replies, "Yeah . . . unless you want to work 40 hours a week!"

Ahhh, I love that movie.

"Disneyland burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting pretty late.

teh descision:

Ive been lucky recently, ive earned a bunch of cash ... but ive also seen Ti4600s go down from ~450 (where I bought mine) to ~150 ... I figure staying with my sucky ass radeon for the next 4-5 months and learning to optimize for ATI / other low end cards (let the flames begin ) ... and waiting for the new cards to hit the scene is worth it ...

thanks everyone for all your advice... and I'll add, i cant wait for the NV40's to hit so I can pick up a kickass 5900 for CHEAP !!!

ummm, long live nVidia ... heh
