Wink I am such a geek!

Okay right now I am concurrently using three computers. I'm logged onto the internet with my notebook browsing short-media forums. I've got my main rig on in the background without the monitor attached, folding. I've got my secondary computer taken apart because I'm installing the new processor (the XP1700+ TBred B JIUHB) and an OS. I'm wired.

haha, feels good to be a geek m8. I'm on my secondary rig right now just surfing the net, and folding of course. My main rig is being tested right now, my burner has been giving me some trouble lately, so I switched ide cables and doing some test burns on it. And IC13 is sitting beside me, I got it hooked up to a old 15" monitor that I use when my clients don't bring me there monitor, it gets hot in my room with all three rigs going, right now it is 81F and 28C in my room, it stays that way pretty much all day to.

I love being a geek. I take pride in the title. I love talking about computers to another geek infront of a non-techie, they just sit there with this look on their face like, "Duhhh...Whats going on here?" Then you will tell someone you are a geek, and they will be like, hey, don't put yourself down, your not a geek. I will be like, yea I am, and I love it!!!

Being a geek has it's advantages... like being able to walk into fry's/circuit city/best buy and make them do more-or-less whatever you want

There are times when I walk up to employees at best buy and stuff and ask them questions like "do any of these computers have discrete graphics cards, or do they all implement some form of integrated GPU?" just so I can see the look of total bewilderment on their faces.

I also get to use my vast knowledge about all things computers (at least compared to the average computer illiterate person) to push the "right" hardware- specifically, AMD and ATi Every system I've recommended has been a local, custom job with an AMD processor... Everyone I've recommended one to has bought one, and I haven't had a complaint yet, out of 20+ systems...

Actually that last post jogged my memory (and yes I'm too lazy to use the edit button right now)

I was in Fry's last week, and some customer asked a sales guy what he needed to connect "2 cpus to 1 monitor keyboard and mouse besides this thing (pointing to the KVM switch in his hand) and the guy doesn't understand a word he's saying. So, I walk over and tell the other customer that what he needs is 2 KVM cables... then the sales guy gets all huffy about me barging in and starts talking about how he wants to connect 2 cpus to 1 monitor and stuff. I look at the guy and say... "un huh... and by 'cpu' he's referring to the tower... do you even know what a cpu IS? Why don't you go down to the hardware aisle and educate yourself?" His response was something like "bbut... ah... umm... err... (and turning to the customer) just buy whatever he tells you to." Then he walked away. God that was funny.

ADSL has dropped down to 10/10k >.< not happy.

If you have a home network just for your own personal use, you qualify as a Geek!

(Running 4 comps with 5 CPUs, 2 KVMs and 2 router/switches....)

Geeky1: It's amazing the amount of BAD advice you hear being given when walking through the aisles of Bestbuy, Circuit City, & CompUSA. I correct people often and when the salesperson drifts off, I tell them where to get it off the Net for 1/2 the price!

Haha, you are right. Usually I try not to step in but then sometimes you have to. One time at the after thanksgiving day sales, I was waiting in like at Office Max because they had the Cendyne dvd-rom's free after rebates. So me and these other guys were standing in line, about 12 of us along with some older people. And this guys starts talking about how he just installed XP and all this stuff and how it was soo much better than 98 and all. So they start talking about the dvd-rom and I say "Usually there just re-baged lite-on's" and they all look at me like "wtf?" and I was like, you guys ever heard of lite on optical drives, haha it was pretty funny.

I think I'm a geek just because I can look at the top of an Athlon XP and tell you how far it's going to overclock within 100MHz.

Any of us here pretty much fall under the same standards too.

I can look at any chip in my computer of a core component and tell how far I can take it, on what voltages and timings.

I only have one computer at my fingertips though, as I'm a poor, out-of-work student.

Having more than Two PCs is an indication of Hardware Upgraditis - an affliction which also connotes Geek status!

If you can build a computer from your spare parts lying around thats faster than most of your Friends systems - YOU may suffer from Hardware Upgraditis!

i am at home using my laptop all while my desktop is 200 miles away in my school apartment. it will be running all summer long (folding) and i have set up mother board monitor to email me when if the processor temp gets too high so that i can then use PC Anywhere to connect to the rig and turn down the # of cycles used
the look on my girlfriend's face was priceless when i explained this set-up to her. she replied only with "YOU ARE A GEEK!"

Rob, man I feel for you dude, but I'm sure you can handle it. I like it when one of my family members come in when we have like family cookouts and stuff, and ask me "what do you do with all these computers" haha I just laugh. I think we are all about at the same level of the geek factor, some more than us, but we all have a lot in common.

But it all started with a couple left over parts, curiousity of linux and servers, and unwillingness to ever give up .

I have two dedicated folding rigs. Maybe I'll build a third using the excuse that I'll give it to my daughter.

I OWN one computer, it folds, it games, it... does other things.

Then my mom has her PC, using my 1337 skills I have Windows ME running as stable as Windows 2000 Uptime is now at 3 weeks and counting LOL, it also folds, just not very quickly with the 1GHz Athlon (Classic).

That is all I own I wish I could have mroe PC's I have an OLD MB here, which I originally got to turn into a slow folder thanks to Prime for it too. But then I ran outta cash faster than I could imagine and so no way of getting it up yet

Although I have some updates I am wanting to "work" out with my small money amount... but i is 6AM here andI am getting tired

One of the companys I do business with is looking to pick up a DS3 to SBC (also in the building) just to handle local loops for T1 service, but untill then I'm stuck on cable. I've been thinking about running a loop to my house for some time. I have the router sitting here in a box for probably the last year, but never could justify the cost of the loop. If he picks up that DS3, that would bring my loop charges down quite a bit, and make it a consideration.

Right now, all my stuff sits in a locked, secure, enviromentally controlled building with redundant AC and filtered power, raised floors, blah blah etc... Would cost me 1/2 mil to bring a building up to that spec, a cost that I'm not quite ready to take on. I would bust a huge nut having it at my house. First power failure and I would have business's lined up to lynch me. So untill I'm the size of rackshack or rackspace, its more economical to rent space from a carrier neutral facility like switch and data. Then I would consider backhauling fiber out to another facility.

My Battalion

Here is what I've got:

1) T-Bird 1200 @1333
2) T-Bird 1200 @1400
3) XP1700+
4) K6-3/450
5) P166
6) P133
7) P166 (Laptop)

All networked. The crappy little computers are used for special uses. One in the bedroom is just there as an MP3 terminal. Another functions as a News Ticker machine (I'm a news junkie).

They ALL fold, though the bottom four CPU-wise are lucky to finish a WU every week or so.

Once I find a couple more ATX cases (I know it's weird, but I drive around on "trash day" and find stuff like that on the curb), I will have a K6-2/550 and an Athlon 850 (runs fine at 8.5X110 = 935) going, at which point I will likely retire the non-laptop pentiums.

Do I qualify as a (ghetto) Geek?

Hell, all of us here is, seeing as pretty much all of the members here know what their stuff, but we still have questions, thats when we learn more, and up our geek levels. But it's all in fun and the love of computers and what they can do that drive us. I mean, I didnt know what F@H was this time last year, but I'm glad that I'm folding, if not my unses cpu cycles would be going to waste.

that's a helluva pile of fans
