Angry Damn Temps

Earlier when my system was running for 2 days straight i was getting 45/32 full load now and 42/30 idle, and now i'm getting 51/36 idle and 55/38 load. What the hells going on. Blasts... guess i'll have to clean out some dust again.

Maybe a rise in ambient temps?

Christ, my system is full of it and i dont have a single degree more than when it was clean. Its something else. Heck, my radiator which is suppose to be blue is more white/grey-ish.

Mack... you're on water tho. You've got a honking big radiator (compared to a typical heatsink, if nothing else) and you're using a working fluid with much higher thermal conductivity than air. I'd assume that water cooling is less affected by dust than air cooling is...

A radiator is actually more sensitive to dust than a heatsink. It still uses fans to cool them, just like a heatsink.

On top of that, i even have the radiator outside the case which is even more dustier.
There is no way a little dust can make 10c difference on the cpu and 6c on the system temps. A few degrees ambient change make a hell of a difference.

Lightbulb I noticed...

...that my temps had crept up somewhat.

A complete dusting, and a new application of AS2 dropped my temps by 4C. I'm in A/C, and my room temp has been the same all summer.

Im not saying cleaning doesnt help, dont get me wrong. Not 10-15C as in Blackhawks case though, thats impossible with dust cleaning only. But then again, maybe all his hair from his last haircut was stuck in the heatsink. Then i understand a 15c difference . One important thing is airflow blockage. Re-route a few cables if possible, tejp them against the inside of the case etc. Besides, 58c is way to much for a SLK 900 and a 90mm fan combo. The difference between the system and cpu-temps are normal, maybe JUST a little high, 55/38.

I hope i am wrong though and that some cleaning gets the good temps back but i doubt it.

Mack, I've noticed that my watercooled dually is a lot more resistant to dust buildup than a hsf is; I guess that there is enough excess cooling capacity in the radiator to more than make up the loss in cooling efficiency due to partially clogged radiator fins.

Al, it might be dust buildup, but if the temps climbed all of a sudden then I would think that something must have happened, like a case fan failing or the ambient temps where your computer is set up are quite a bit higher than what they were when you saw your original temps.

Well, it definetly wasn't dust. I went through my computer all last night and didn't find anything. The cpu is using a fresh install of as3 and the heatsink is attached perfectly with no holes between the base and core.

All case fans are turning (2 front, 1 back, 1 blowhole) along with the side hd fan i installed last night.

Temps while playing mp3's is still 30/50. Be sure to take into considering my voltage and overclock. Is this still too high for an slk900 and 92 mm fan combo?

One other thought: have you flashed to a new bios revision recently? I seem to remember reading at the Abit forums that there was some kind of temp compensation revision in the last bios revision or so.

My guess is htat you need to dismount hte HSF, clean and then reapply the thermal compound. I have one CPU that seems to require this at regular intervals.

ed...u got a F for reading comprehension...bad bad boy!! (dont worry i do that a lot too) but regardless..my friend is having a similiat problem but with the slk900....I on the other hand am not...its quite strange how the temps dont creep up on me...

I'm running revision 17 and the temps have never been quite as lame as this.

Another thought I've had concerns the SLK900. I know that it uses the 4 mounting holes around the socket, but does it use spring tensioned mounts like the Alpha 8045 and Swiftec MC/MCX462 series of hsf's? I've never seen the mounting system of a SLK900 and I'm not sure if they use spring tensioned bolts. If it does use them like the Swifty and Alpha, then slip a plastic washer or 2 in between the bolt head and the spring tensioner. I've done that with my Alpha and Swifties and it helps maintain a good firm contact with the cpu.

I do know that the SLK900 is a big, heavy chunk of copper and maybe your mounts aren't keeping a good firm contact patch with the proc.

What mudd suggested sounds plausible... also, it's a little OT, but the next time you buy thermal compound, get Arctic Silver Ceramique, not AS3. The Ceramique is cheaper (by far- I got 22g for $7) and works better...
