We've Arrived in Alaska

Hi, guys! Sorry I haven't been very active at the forums in several weeks.

We've moved to Alaska. When I left Alaska in 98 I told myself that I would do all possible to return some day. My dream came true. I have ended my Army career with military retirement effective October 1. My family and I departed our previous home near Augusta, Georgia on Aug 22, arriving in the Anchorage area (4700 miles later) Aug 30.

Since arriving, we've entered my son (Xandermann at Short-Media) in school, completed final paperwork with my new employer, and have just ended a very frenetic several days of househunting.

Tomorrow we are signing a purchase agreement for a home. Another dream come true. We found a mountainside home that overlooks a wild river in a valley with steep snowcapped mountains on the other side. This view, seen from the kitchen, living room, master bedroom, and second story deck, also looks into another valley up the river and a glacier. Nothing man-made is visible from the property except the house and our driveway. There are very few homes on this mountain. Seclusion is perfect - in the middle of nature, but only a 15-minute drive from stores, gasoline, and a highway. To add icing to the cake, the construction quality of the home is excellent...and we'll have DSL broadband. I'll provide pictures when I get a chance.

The road up to the house is paved and plowed in the winter, but I'm glad our family vehicles are four wheel drive and all wheel drive.

I'm happier and more content than I've been in years.

Next week, we are moving out of our present lodging to a furnished apartment, where we will reside until mid-November when we move into our new home. Presently, I only have limited Internet access (lobby of our lodging). Our apartment will have cable; I'll be setting up the home computers ASAP, as I brought them with us in our cargo trailer. I hope to be more active as a member and moderator on the forums. I'm missing you guys.

Your Friend,

Leonardo

We're all looking forward to pictures of that view...I'm sure your new office in the home will be set up with a panoramic view, moose wandering by, men in plaid jackets with beards...all that Alaskan stuff.

Glad that dreams are coming true, you made it safely and settling in has begun.

No kidding - you are accurate. Just today I was digging in the trailer for my boots and warmer clothing. I'm just glad we aren't returning to Fairbanks - we had three long winters there at -20 to
-55*F.

I know you were taking a period of "R&R" but that means rest and recoup ... not..

Retire and relocate

Sounds like the new property is gonna be very cool

Outstanding! I hope you were able to keep the price of that home within 6 digits. Every time I have looked at the prices of homes in the Anchorage area I just about choke. It sounds like you found a great place and I hope it all works out. You must post some pics when you get settled in.

We were fortunate on the home purchase. There is no reason it shouldn't have been a higher price. Came to find out, it was put on the market due to a divorce settlement - they needed to sell fast due to a cash crunch. ...And sell fast they did!

Yeah, we gave Anchorage a shot - not much there for the dollar. You were right Larry - the available acreage in Anchorage and Eagle River has about dried up. Most new construction is now 35 to 50 miles north of Anchorage. It's definitely a sellers' market up here.

Sounds awesome Leo!

Congrats, Leo-- Sounds like your one form of R&R puts you in a good place for the OTHER form.... Hunting, Fishing, Hiking, Trapping (???), etc.

Down south in FL., my Town and County survived the eye of Charley, BARELY (our house came off better than most, it will need its roof retiled and other more minor things like new fruit trees, lanai cage, new pool heater, quite a rework of sprinkler system, etc). Frances was a bit better to my immediate locale (My Uncle Gordon's house in Orlando area survived both also, though he went for three days without power after Frances and he is as much of a geek on web as I and you are and is trying to write an IT\Sci-Fi related book also). Ivan, who knows??? ISIS, I hope does not come our way. Nah, not stealing YOUR welcome back thread, welcome back friend!

John.

Congratulations...on all of the good news. It'll be great to have you back around a little more. Can't say as how I envy you moving in in Nov up there tho - we are supposed to get snow here in Edmonton TONIGHT already, Sept. 8 and they got quite a bit today in Grande Prairie, which is over an hour south of mile 1 of the Alaska Highway. Hope you don't get hammered to hard.

WOW... sounds like a place to spend the rest of my life... Every modern convenience and yet still rustic and natural. So, you have room for guests? If so, I start working on my wife to think about Alaska for a vacation trip....

Look forward to the pictures....

Leo,
A well-deserved, hard earned retirement for you and the family. It's great to hear you found the perfect place. I spent several weeks in June of this year sailing just off the coast of Alaska for a combined USN/USAF exercise. Breathtaking! I prefer Maine, but Alaska is still an amazing place. I'd also be interested in some pics...

Back in the lobby again for some Internet time. Should have the home puters up and online next week in the apartment.

No snow here yet. It's been jacket weather in the mornings and shirt sleeves in the afternoons - crystal clear and sunny.

Keto - the weather here is moderated by the Cook Inlet and the Pacific, so it's not nearly as cold as northern Canada or interior Alaska.

Pics..pics. Yes - I'll provide some as soon as I get ahold of a digital camera.

Thanks so much for all the replies to this thread. I really miss my you guys.

Good news! I've got both the home computers set up and online with cable at our temporary apartment. Leo's active in the forums again. Let me address some comments (plenty of spare time before I start my new job):
I never knew Alaska had that much of a housing market.
About 50% of the Alaska population (only 650,000~) is located in the Metropolis of Anchorage. Also, Anchorage doesn't have much room to grow - Cook Inlet to the West, and mountain ranges ringing the city on the other sides.
Congrats, Leo-- Sounds like your one form of R&R puts you in a good place for the OTHER form.... Hunting, Fishing, Hiking, Trapping (???), etc.
Fishing? Yes! Skiing? Yes. I won't have my gear until Salmon season is over, but skiing will commence with the first good permanent snow.
....sounds like a dream come true.
Indeed!
Another hand for pics!
Not much cash will be available after my home down payment and closing costs. I'll see if I can borrow a digital camera from someone. Or better yet, just get a CD when I get film processing from present camera.
Can't say as how I envy you moving in in Nov up there tho -
It won't be that bad. Southern Alaska is not that cold, relatively speaking. Not nearly as cold as northern northern Canada or interior Alaska.
WOW... sounds like a place to spend the rest of my life... Every modern convenience and yet still rustic and natural.
My thoughts exactly.
lol ...screw the lan I wanna fly fish for salmon!
So do I! People do that up here. Pike, too.

Well, then congrats on the promotion and relaxation. I on the other hand have a year of instructor duty then it's back to the fleet. I hit 10 years this December, so I haven't quite paid my dues like you.

Looking forward to seeing you back!

Got some photos back today (CD JPGs from film negatives). The processor, Sam's Club, did a horrible print job, but the negatives/CD images are acceptable. The pictures here are of me, my wife Angelika, my son "Xandermann", and Turbo the Greyhound (The "Turbonator"). :Canflag:

David Beckham would be proud

(English football superstar who used to have a haircut like yours) more to the point what does your dad think of it? Mine would have killed me if I had done that while living at home.

Nice dog, by the way, I have real soft spot for greyhounds.

Dad didn't mind at all. I don't think a Mohawk is any more 'radical' than a crew cut. His mother cuts his hair, BTW! Both she and I thought it was a great idea. I never had the opportunity to try anything like that.

Green grass? Where's all the snow?

As for the mohawk, I had one when I was five years old. They were all the rage in 1964. There's nothing new under the sun except maybe the way people look at things.

Glad to see you all looking well.

Mohawk-style haircuts are ancient, literally. The Polish nobility even wore them a couple hundred years back.

Green grass? Sure, why not? Much of Alaska is not the frozen wasteland many think. For sure though, parts of it ARE! North Slope only has about two months of warm weather a year. LOL It is snowing cats and dogs now; but the temp is above freezing so the snow isn't sticking.
