i go to delete everything on my harddrive, using fdisk, so i can create new partitions, and it keeps telling me, ''could not change partitions, because the disk could not be locked'' , what do i do?and what does this mean?

Lightbulb You might try...

...using something like diskedit, booted from a dos floppy. Then just fill the first few hundred sectors with zero's.

Bye Bye mbr, so long partitions, see ya later data, but if you really REALLY want a fresh start, that's one way to go.

(This is what we used in the shop to be sure and totally wipe a virus-infected drive before fdsik, format & reinstall)

Unhappy No doubt

Sorry, I'm sure there are plenty of other ways, but I've used diskedit for so long (and with great success) that I can't think of any.

If something comes to mind I'll let you know.

(If you're upgrading to XP, you could boot from the CD and fdisk from there.)

You should download the drive tool from the drive manufacturer's website. Every drive manufacturer has a tool that can make a bootable floppy, that you can use to do a variety of things: zero out the drive, blitz the mbr and part. table, check the drive for problems, reset SMART status, etc. That's your best bet.
