New Home in Alaska, Pics for Ya

A few weeks ago, I returned to Short-Media, having been absent while
moving to Alaska . I promised you guys pics. (In order not to squash you unfortunate souls with dial-up internet, I've downsized the pics and will distribute them over several posts.)

[EDIT 20 NOV 05 - updated photos] I apologize if some of these photos appear twice in the thread. Late night editing can produce less than desirable results.

Looking forward to seeing these mountains covered with snow in just a month or so! (BTW, the master bedroom has the same views as the deck.) Thanks for sharing my pictures with me!

[EDIT: 20 NOV 05, updated photos] Interior shots. Master bedroom - second third photo.

Wow, that must be an amazing feeling to wake up and walk out to that view! Congrats on the new digs, Leo.

When my wife and I drove up to the house, she navigating, I driving, I about fainted when we stepped out of the truck. I just couldn't believe that no one had made an offer on the property yet. We had been on the go for days, viewing every home that seemed to fit our parameters. We found this one, and had an offer in within 48 hours.

"What's wrong with it? Something has got to be wrong with it" I thought to myself when we first viewed the house. I have yet to find anything wrong. The engineer's inspection came back with a solid confirmation of the construction and quality. Heck, the house is only six years old! It's on a septic system and well. The water is good enough no water softener is needed (unlike our home in Fairbanks!). The roads are paved, and are serviced in the winter. (Still though, we're glad our vehicles have four-wheel and all-wheel drive.) The driving time to my new work location in Anchorage is 30 minutes; 25 minutes to my son's school. Ten minutes away is a Wal Mart, grocery store, and shopping. To add icing to the cake, DSL is available. Cable TV is not available but the house's orientation on the mountain is well suited for satellite.

Beautiful Place Leo. Makes me want to pack up and be your neighbor. (The one a few miles down the road ) I could leave hurricane alley in a heartbeat, but the old lady would freeze to death real quick. This is sounding better all the time

For those of you interested in construction:

metal roof; 2 X 6 construction; well depth 320 feet; poured concrete foundation with foam insulation molds; 5.5 foot crawl space; vaulted ceilings; vinyl dual-pane windows; wood laminate floors in the larger rooms; natural gas furnace - dual heating loops for potable hot water and hot water-interface baseboard heating; ~4 & 1/2 Star energy rating; no air conditioning (don't need it! )

That is one beautiful place you have there, Lynn! It makes me want to move out of the flatlands of La right now, except I think it would be too cold for this southerner to deal with.

Leo,
I'm jealous! What with hurricane Jeanne offshore by a few miles, those mountains look so damn peaceful! Enjoy the fall as I'm sure winter will be a bear!

Entropy,
Get a motorcycle and ride around the morraines in middle Wisconsin. I used to take a bottle of wine and a willing female out for fun filled rides through the kettle morraines of Wisconsin. It and the Cheese is what made my stay there bearable!! Get out from behind that computer!!

Flint, while I still have power!!

Haha, Clutch, I've been to the ocean like, 6 or 7 times It's excellent when warm (up in Nova Scotia, that is). And Flint, the kettles are about 20 miles from my house, and yeah, right around nowish to November it's beautiful. Still ... Leo's place is several orders of magnitude cooler than mine!

No, not destroyed - just rearranged. New beach front property for some, home relocation for others. Sorry if that sounds crass.

Alaska isn't without its hazards. I've added earthquake insurance for my home, to be effective when we move in. Alaska has more earthquakes than California.

Well, that is...until I step out onto the deck on a wintry morning, slip on the ice, and put my back out!
but you put the lie to this Alaska tourism ad: [No One You Know Lives Here]
Almost true. The State is about twice the size of Texas, with only about 600,000 in population. Oh, er, it's now 600,003 if you include my family.

Leo,

Wait till next summer when you can drive 2hrs to got to Whittier, 3 hrs to Seward and 4 hrs to get to Homer. They are the best places you can go from where you now live. And the icing on the cake is that you can stop by at the Russian River to fish for reds on the way home. I also strongly recomend a hike to Crescent Lake on the Kenai Peninsula.

Here is a tease of Homer from my trip last July.

Larry,

I've been to Seward several times salmon and halibut fishing, and glacier walking. Haven't been to Kenai, Homer, or Whittier. If budget is on track next summer -- yup, Russian River for reds, Copper River for Kings, Homer for halibut, Valdez for silvers....

Northern Exposure - which was filmed in Washington. You'd be surprised though, how much of the silliness in Northern Exposure rings true up here with the Alaskan culture!

Thanks for your compliments. We aren't moved in yet. Sale closing is in about two weeks. All the inspections have come back with great results - well, septic system, engineering, home appraisal. Yup, we're excited.
