double sided Cds

Anyone know if double sided CDs exist?

I have never seen them, I'm not sure whether that would actually be possible or not with a CD. Obviously you get double sided DVD's but I think the way the lazer works with a CD and DVD might be slightly different.

Thanks jdii1215, sounds like that's your field. So we'll take your word for it.

Cheers

it's posable to make a double sided CD. DVD and CD's are like records. at a microscopic level there are little divits in the plastic. the the laser is shot out and the time it takes for it to come back is read as digital data. I think a divit is a 1 and no divit is a 0..not sure. but as long as it has a reflective backing to it the light will reflect back to the sensor. so it theroy if they put the reflective material in the middle of the cd then both sides are usable. kinda what they do for double sided DVD's. But to ansewr your question...ah ya I don't know if they exist.

I've seen double sided CD's, but never CD-R's, it was some sort of album / bonus live album deal.

Manufactured CD's have physical bumps on them, CD-R's get little dots burned onto them by the CD writer. The side of the CD that's actually at risk is the side with the writing on it - you scratch that you scratch data. You scratch the other side you scratch plastic.

I wonder if there's some problem with having one layer that gets burned... if somehow it might write through to the other side. It's not like the spec allows CD's to get thicker...

He got temp-banned after a little tantrum he had over the "auto-login" feature of the board. Chances are he's not coming back again after the things he said.

He said some really, really idiotic things, like he was trying to get his ass banned (to Shorty, Prime, Keebler, and many others).

I wonder who he THINKS he is...

Thanks for the clarification. It sucks when someone leaves. Sucks worse when they take their posts with 'em.

well on to bigger and better tweaking!!

DS CD-Rs would be painful as they would need to be thicker and also since they're so susceptible to scratches, most people probably wouldn't use both sides.

On the other topic, I can't even imagine how an "auto-login" debate can get so heated that it results in someone getting banned. It's kinda odd to see gaps in the threads. It may be a good idea to keep the posts (that are acceptable) to maintain the flow of the threads.

I'd like to say that I've been on threads with JD at Icrontic and he's joined prosoundreview.com He's been nothing but a wealth of information and extremely patient. I do not know details of nor do I want to of what happened but I hope it can be resolved.

I have seen them mfg that way, but not as CD-Rs.

There is no reason that you can't, but there is no demand. They would put an opaque layer between the two reflective ones.
