Interesting Question

Interesting Question here. Microsoft has the nVidia 44.03 latest official video drivers in the Critical Updates part of the windows update website, and not in the drivers part.

The question is why would they want me to install these over the 44.90's?

I never had any problems with 44.03's but if you're doing fine with the 44.90's then stay with them.

Because those are the latest WHQL signed drivers, and the very latest from NVIDIA are not signed yet.

The last time I installed the drivers from the update site, they were in the drivers part (last month)

A Thought...

I just revamped my girlfriend's computer a couple days ago and got a blue screen with an "NV4" error, which it said was a video problem. Maybe MS found a problem with their previous WHQL drivers and figured it would be a good idea to urge everyone to update, as opposed to just tossing the drivers out there for those that want 'em.

PS -no problems after I installed the new drivers.

Danball' is perfectly allowed to be slightly perplexed with this, as it is quite strange. He is right, usually all driver updates are located in the driver updates list, and not the critical updates. It could be (like folk have said) that the Windows Update engine was programmed to make the official Nvidia drivers appear in the critical updates list if it detected some known Nvidia driver troublemakers, but I feel a more plausible explanation is that either, Danball' is yanking all our chains, or it is some glitch with Windows Update. I suspect it is the latter.

Either way, don't let Microsoft dictate to you which driver you should use Danball'. I don't know about you, but I prefer to make those kinds of decisions for myself.

Cheers

Question Maybe...

It occured to me after reading Spinners comments that one logical explanation would be that MS found a conflict between one of their many recent critical updates and the old WHQL drivers. They may have feared that people would uninstall the critical update if they began having problems all of a sudden, rather than go looking for an updated video driver.

But danball yank our chains? Naaah...
