Wasnt expecting this ATTO

Knocked my socks clean off. Are the raptors really that much faster?

this is a single maxtor 120gb 8mb cache I paid about 80 bucks for. I was expecting 50,000 but not 60,000 from this drive. It does 60,000 on every device I have hung it on so far. A promise tx2 Ultra, the sis onboard a ecs k7s5a and this was on a 1540. All just kiss 60,000 basicaly.

Yeah, that's about the same score as what one of my 160GBs does singly. The new IDE drives (the Maxtors anyhow, I can't comment on anything else as I've only used DiamondMax 9's...) are very fast drives...

That's a pretty descent score. Curious to say the least. I've never got a single IDE drive up to those speeds before.

I have the same drive in a 2mb cache version and it hits exactly 50,000 on all thew same controllers. So far I have been very impressed with these new Maxtors. They are fast and dead quiet which has gotten to be as important almost as speed to me.

But considering the price also these are just awesome drives for the desktop or casual storage. my scsi raid is better for databases and stuff by far but for mp3's and downloads and stuff these rock.

I've allways considered Maxtor as being a bit neutral in performance, stability and noise, nothing bad, nothing good. But your bench to the contrary has made me re-evaluate that opinion. I'll certainly give Maxtor a proper look next time I'm looking at getting a hard drive.

Thanks for posting Tex.

And we thought ATA133 wasn't much faster but it is, specially when the drive is connected to a SATA controller.
Check this out: I'm not talking Raptors or 8MB cache drives here, this is an array (16/16 FAT32) of 2 x 30GB 2MB cache Maxtor drives 6E030L0 ($30 ea. AR at Staples) attached to the SATA ports via 2 x RocketHead adapters w/o any tweaks what so ever.

Equito, that's pretty damn good. They're not as fast as the 160GB drives I'm using, but they're at a major disadvantage- they've got a much lower areal density and less cache... that's an impressive score, especially for 2 $30 drives.

Thanks! you know, I've been an anti-Maxtor for a long time but I'm very impressed with these drives.
They run cool and they're very quiet.

Cheers!

mine are dead quiet and very cool. And mine scores 60,000 on a ata100 as well as ata133 controller EQ. The scores are identical. The new drives are fast but not from ata133.

maybe I need to sell my 5 WD SE's and just get some cheap Maxtors.

Yeah, buy yours are 8MB cache, mine are only 2MB.
My benerable ATA100 IBM's don't even come close to these Maxtors under the same conditions and the only difference between the two is ATA133...

no the differance is the new drive technologies. Each generation is faster.

I have two 40gb 180gxp ibm's with only 2mb cache and they hit hit 50,000 also at ata100, just like the 120gb maxtor with 2mb cache also at ata100. These maxtors test the same for me on a ata100 ide port as they do on a ata133 ide port. They are just fast drives, but its not due to ata133. In fact that 8mb cache one hit almost 60,000 again just now on a stinking ata66 ide port for gods sake.
