How to proceed with disabled browser?

edited November 2005 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I have the Elite Toolbar / pokapoka trojan. I ran Ad Aware many times, but the file resurrects itself. I did not have Spybot installed. Problem now is, my IE browser is disabled so I can't install any new download tactics to combat it. But I do have another computer so I can download and transfer files with thumb drive. However, I am a complete novice at software manipulation... Any help -- even how to begin -- is greatly appreciated. Can I delete IE and install a new copy via USB and then follow the procedure outlined for this board? Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

    No need to do anything drastic. Hopefully we can sort this out for you :)

    Start by downloading Mozilla Firefox. It is an alternative browser to Internet Explorer.

    Tell me if Firefox works and then we can proceed further :)

    Post a new HJT log aswell :thumbsup:

    Installed Firefox via USB but it won't open -- churns for a few seconds and then just quits. Installed Spybot but it won't run either -- it insists on looking for updates and I have no active browser. Current HJT log follows:

    Disable System Restore - explained here

    View hidden files and folders - explained here

    YOU MAY WANT TO PRINT OUT (OR SAVE) THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTONS AS YOU'LL HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECTION

    Go into Safe Mode - explained here
    ===

    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ichckupd.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\CMSystem\CMSystem.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\System Files\System.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\exe82.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\APD123.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe << This file
    ===

    Reboot into Normal Mode and enable System Restore (same link as disabling). Post a new HJT log and tell me how things are?

    Update Oct 19: Spybot is now working -- found and removed several dozen problems, all except SurfSideKick (which is part of Pokapoka and was the recurring hit identified by Ad Aware). Mozilla Firefox is also running, but only displays the main browser page. It will not connect to any URL. Summary: I now have the tools installed but the same problem still exists. What next?

    My apologies - I did not see your last reply before posting the update. I am leaving town today and won't be able to implement the actions you have listed until Saturday. I will work on this when I return. Thanks again. Talk to you in a few days.

    First, thank you SO much your help thus far!

    Removed 5 of 7 files that you flagged (but not No's 2-3):
    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ichckupd.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\CMSystem\CMSystem.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe << This file
    C:\Program Files\System Files\System.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\exe82.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\APD123.exe << This file
    C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe << This file

    The CMSystem folder contains only plugin.dll and uninstall.exe. No "CMSsystem.exe"

    The Ssk.exe in Surfsidekick produces a message "cannot move, being used".

    Here is the current HJT:

    Please move HJT to its own folder on your C: so backups can be created. Do this before continuing.
    ===

    Go into Safe Mode - explained here
    ===

    Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked'

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll
    ===

    Find and Delete the following in Safe Mode:

    C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3 << this folder
    ===

    Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HJT log :)

    Trogan_1000 has requested that I take a look here.

    ==

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit". Do not forget to re-enable it when we are done :).

    ===============

    Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

    SurfSideKick

    The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgkgdd.exe reg_run
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Billminder.lnk = ?
    O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Scheduled Updates.lnk = ?
    O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Startup.lnk = ?

    O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.ht m (file missing) (HKCU)

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgkgdd.exe

    Search for...

    repairs302972949.dll

    ...using "Start | Search...".

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    ==

    Download rkfiles.zip
    http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
    Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

    Reboot in Safe mode.

    Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
    It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
    Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

    To save some time, could you please have each of the files that rkfiles finds, uploaded for an online scan here;

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/

    Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

    Unable to find toolbar with this subheading: "can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. " Spybot doesn't even have a toolbar -- is there one hidden?

    Shall I perform the other operations listed or must I do Teatimer uncheck first ?
  • TroganTrogan London, UK
    edited October 2005
    Do this:
    • Open SpyBot
    • Under Mode click Advanced and say YES to the warning
    • Bottom Left, click Tools
    • Then, Upper left click Resident
    • Uncheck TeaTimer

    Do this and then continue with Crunchie's fix :)
  • edited October 2005
    unchecked Teatimer. Thanks for the help.

    Found 8 of 9 files in HJT but got this error when clicked "Fix Checked"--

    "Unexpected error #52 (Bad file name or number)in sub GetLongPath(?.exe).
    Send report to merijn@spwareinfo.com"

    Subsequent HJT (after doing the remaining deletes) yielded exactly the same report as previously posted.

    Continued anyway with the deletes--

    1. successfully deleted C:\\Pgm Files\SurfSideKick

    2. found sgkgdd.exe but it DISAPPEARED after I right clicked and looked at Properties!!!! How does THAT happen???

    3. successfully deleted "repairs302972949.dll"

    Shall I run the rkfiles now or wait until previous instructions have been completed?

    A new HJT log and the rkfiles log please, once you have completed everything from my previous post.
  • edited October 2005
    Thank you for your patience.

    Let me clarify previous post. I ran HJT AFTER doing all the deletes, but the last log is identical to the previous one posted. Apparently the error message indicates that Spybot did not "Fix" any of the checked items.

    I am now at work and won't have access to the problem PC until I get home tonight. I will run the rkfiles and submit as noted. I will also rerun HJT and post here.

    Bit of confusion going on here. Spybot's tea-timer should be disabled first. Do not run spybot to fix anything. Then run hijackthis and place a check next to all the items I listed. Once done, delete the files I marked for deletion.

    Reboot then follow the instructions for running rkfiles.

    My mistake - sorry. Meant to say HJT did not "Fix" any of the checked items. I did not run Spybot.

    I believe I did all you requested (except the rkfiles) including Teatimer unchecked, HJT, and manual delete of files. You did not suggest doing anything different this time (in response to the error 52 message), so how will HJT work better now?

    I assume that running rkfiles to identify files has no bearing on how HJT works. Is that not true?

    Do not worry about the error message :). I have seen that plenty of times but hijackthis still seems to do the job.
    I need you to run rkfiles to identify possible malware files that hijackthis cannot see. There is one file in your log that is related to the qoologic trojan. Where there is one, there are usually more.

    We are making progress now! Mozilla is running and I have access to this forum via the formerly disabled computer!

    Deleted files (some not found) and no error messages.
    Ran HJT and got no errors, but one checked file remained (winsync) so I ran "Fix checked" once more, then got a clean scan (see following).

    I did see a few popups (including some casino types) as I was logging into this forum. I hope I'm not getting reinfected...

    Here's the HJT log; now I will go run rkfiles momentarily.

    I am nervous about the number of popups that I'm getting while working. I will unplug the ethernet cable until I hear from someone with next instruction. Thanks to both of you for your help. THis is such a great forum!!

    Download Killbox from here.
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
    Run KillBox, select the option: Replace on Reboot
    Then, in the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\93_app13.exe

    Select the option: Use Dummy
    Press the button with a red circle and a white X (Delete File button)
    Click Yes at the Replace on Reboot confirmation prompt.
    Click No at the request to reboot.

    Do the exact same as above for each and every one of the files that follow, and select No at the request to reboot!

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MTE2ODM6ODoxNg.exe

    Finally, in the Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SetupCasino.exe

    Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
    Click Yes at the Replace on Reboot prompt.
    Click Yes at the request to reboot.

    On this last file, close KillBox and Notepad, and Reboot the computer!!

    ==

    Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
    If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

    1) Is it safe to download directly to the infected PC, or should I continue using a laptop and transferring files via USB drive? I ran Ad Aware this morning and found nine new objects which were not there yesterday. They were eliminated, but HJT found a new occurrence of winsync.skggdd (or something similar...). Obviously I have not set up any protection for it yet (but I have read the recommendations elsewhere on this forum).

    2) RE: Killbox, "Do the exact same for each and every file that follows..." If your reply is a canned instruction that refers only to the 93_app13.exe and the one file that follows ( MTE2xxx) then I understand. But it is somewhat confusing when there's only one file following your instruction that says "each and every one".

    3) What about the last two labeled "OK"? I assume I can ignore them.

    4) What is a script blocking program? How will I know if I have one?

    Yep, that's a canned :). Sorry for the confusion. I wouldn't download directly from the net yet, just to be safe.
    If you have a script blocking program it will alert you. Norton has one.
    Do not delete the 'OK' files :).

    On a hunch I ran Ad Aware after Killbox and found several more new items (but not SurfSideKick) and deleted them. Ran HJT again and found some returning items: winsync\skdgdd (sort of) and HKLM\SurfSideKick. Fixed them and ran this log. I am not leaving the ethernet cable plugged in but these files keep coming back!

    Please download LQfix.exe from one of the following locations:

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.exe
    http://miekiemoes.geekstogo.com/tools/LQfix.exe

    Save it to your desktop.
    • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
    • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
    • You need an active Internet connection, so make sure your connection is enabled.
    • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
    • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts.
    • Your system will reboot afterwards.
    • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.

    ==

    Once the script has finished running, do the following;

    Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sgkgdd.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\endnb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe

    -

    Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

    Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe (file missing)

    Open the text file you saved previously and right click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
    Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

    Ad Aware is finding no objects to remove, but Spybot continues to uncover SurfSideKick. The file is not showing up in HJT however.

    HJT is unable to fix the file indicated for removal in Crunchies last post:
    O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe (file missing)

    I made sure the TeaTimer is unchecked, Sys Restore off, and ran LWfix.exe several times. I ran HJT several times after checking the box and continue to see no effect.

    ALso, please clarify: the three files to be run in Killbox -- shalll I paste them all at once or one at a time?

    Current HJT log 07 follows:

    You paste all three of them at the same time. The option to paste from the clipboard facilitates this.
  • edited October 2005
    Ok, I had already done all three at once, so that wasn't the reason the file is still there. filename=
    O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\R2FyeSBOaWNrZWwA\command.exe (file missing)

    Is there another procedure? I repeated the instructions you posted several times with the same result. See HJT log 07 above.
