Gigabyte ga-7vaxp ultra RAID 1

I have this mobo and running RAID 1 on the PROMISE controller. ABout every 7 hours it goes critical and then does an auto rebuild. I have changed the hard drives - I use Maxtor ATA 133 7200rpm - and the cables with no effect. I have not overclocked and there are no other problems with the system. Any help gladly received.

Have you tried Raid 0? If so, does it rebuild then as well? I´m not saying you should use raid 0, only if you have seen the same there as well. Do you have updated the bios on that controller? Windows drivers etc? Is it the same software that creates the rebuilds all the time or does it happen in idle as well?

No i have not used raid 0. The rebuild occurs both on idle and busy. It is an embedded PROMISE chip. Would I have to update the mobo BIOS?

You would yes, but its possible to mod the Promise bios so that you get the full version and not the "light" version that is on the embedded ones. Is it possible for you to try Raid 0? Set both the drives as master. They are the same drives right? Im just making sure here.

1) it would be a good idea to flash to the latest motherboard BIOS and use the most current PROMISE drivers.

2) RAID 0 delivers better performance but RAID 1 delivers data integrity which seems moot at this moment evidenced by the instability.

Yes, make sure you have the latest motherboard bios + promise bios, update if you haven't, and make sure that you are using the correct drivers to match the promise bios version you are using.

Once you've made sure you've got the latest of all the above, post back.

Those gigabytes and the built in promise are a match made in hell. Terrible implementation.
