Spyware strike has got me bad

Hello, can anyone help me get rid of this thing? Its constantly popping up with bogus warnings and occasionally tries to control IE and then new and different warnings appear and I don't know which ones are legit.
I notice some people have had success, so if anyone can spare the time I'd be grateful.
Here's my HJT log, I think theres some other nasty gear there too.
Cheers

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click 'Fix Checked':

    ===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido: (Do not use the computer while Ewido is scanning as it may interrupt the scan)
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.

    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.

    Any sense ?
Thanks for helping me out, sorry if I did anythng wrong, I went to work and might have missed some part of the process.

Also, do you know if you can just "get" the spywarestrike virus or if you need to download or run something corrupt. I live in a shared house and let people use my computer and was wondering if someones messed up and are denying it, or if this could have happened to anyone.

I'm not 100% certain how SpywareStrike gets on people's computer but I think for 1) if your computer is not properly updated then you are likely to get infected and 2) the way some people browse could have got you infected.

Not sure why SmitRem hasn't worked. Your not the only one were the file hasn't worked. Maybe this is a new form of SpywareStrike that needs sorting.

I know you have done this but can you do the following please

    Step 1
Delete the current SmitRem file you have

    Step 2
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

    Step 3
You may want to print these instructions or save them as you'll have no internet connection once in Safe Mode

Go into Safe Mode - explained here

    Step 4
    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)
    - Close ALL open windows
    Click Fix Checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareStrike] C:\Archivos de programa\SpywareStrike\SpywareStrike.exe /h

    Step 5
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

    Step 6
    Reboot into Normal Mode.

Post a new HijackThis Log and the contents of the smitfiles.txt log

    Hi,
unfortunately due to a problem with the 'Dr watson post mortem debugger' I can't right click anything without freezing the system up completely. I get a warning that the Dr watson Post mortem debugger has had to quit. Its an ongoing thing and until I can get the means to fully reinstall windows (I lost my own installer) I just have to avoid right clicking icons. Its a bad scene. Can I run the smitrem.exe and select runthis.bat from there?

Sorry about all this and thanks for taking the time

Have you downloaded SmitRem? If so, then just double-click on the left button to open it - that should work just fine :)

I just recently found out that Spyware Strike has changed the way it works and the fix for SmitRem has been updated. So, don't forget to delete any old SmitRem file you have and redownload a new file which contains the new update.

The Dr Watson error could be due to a hardware or software error somewhere. After we remove Spyware Strike and any malware, we will see whats left to do :)

Post a new HJT log after doing the instructions above.

Let me know how things go. :)

Your opinion? LIke I say the balloons gone... :)

Thanks a lot man, I'd have nowhere at all to go if it wasn't for you guys on this forum and i think its amazing that you's take the time and effort to do what you do.

And without wishing to sound cheeky- can you see anything else that might be slowing me down?

As for Dr watson, I was prescribed a complete reinstall, which has proved quite difficult to organise, but I should be able to do it before the weekend.

Do you think that should do it?

Also, do you know if you can just "get" the spywarestrike virus or if you need to download or run something corrupt. I live in a shared house and let people use my computer and was wondering if someones messed up and are denying it, or if this could have happened to anyone.
    Some info for you; http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-spywarestrike.html

    Thanks Crunchie :)

This entry can go, since the file is missing

I see you have AVG and Norton on your computer. Having two or more Anti-Virus programs is not a good idea as it can slow down your computer or even crash.

They could also be the cause of the Dr Watson errors. I strongly suggest you keep the one that is up-to-date and unintsall the other one.

If you still get the Dr Watson error message, then a Repair Install would be the best option. What that would do is repair any corrupt or missing system files on your computer.

I'm not an expert but if you need help on how to perform a repair install, then start a thread in the Windows Forum. :)

Your HJT log is clean :)

Let us know how things go. Good Luck

The virus has totally gone, thanks a lot man.
I'm having more problems with reinstalling windows as the only disc I can get is for an older vesion of xp pro and it won't install, so I'm gonna post on the windows forum like you said.
Also, I had got rid of Norton as I noticed they conflicted, and its not in any program list and therefore I can't uninstall it. How would i go about getting rid of it cleanly? Its pretty academic anyway, as I'm going for a clean install and I've backed up what I need.
Thanks again though, you really helped me out and that your a red made it even better - I'm from Old Trafford :)
    Cheers - rhygin

You could try this removal tool for removing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier.

Good Luck with your Repair Install
