Gentlepeople,
I had a nasty infection of 'Antispywarebox' around May. You guys took me through the steps to fix me up. I have be reinfected my as similar virus. I enclose screen shots of it's manifestations. I have since the last attack, a new motherboard (you should attach your Tv Tuner card securely because if it comes loose and falls on your motherboard .......) and Trend Micro PCilin (with a high level of protection.) I run SpyBOt and Ad-Aware every month.

After the PC is turned on, within two minutes,you get a pop-up that goes away if you ignore it. Then you get another popup that will take you to a site if you do anything to it (click any button or close it). Other symtoms are my internet home page being taken over and the in ability of the windows task bar to operate.

A seperate (or possibly related issue) is that Windows will not let me update from it's website as it does not recognise me as an administrator of this PC. I set the PC up and I am the administrator.

    Well as far as I can tell judging from your screenshots, you are probably not the administrator making it obvious why you can't Windows Update. Which is your account? It looks like you have a pretty bad Smitfraud infection. I've been there too. To get rid of that first restart your computer in Safe Mode. Then run Smitfraud.cmd from wherever you have it saved. Select 2.Clean. It will then ask you if you want to clean the registry. Select y. After it will start windows cleanup. Let that run. Restart your computer back to normal mode and report back.

    Also run Hijackthis and select and click fix to these:

    Thanks for the reply and I'll do as you asked. I am the Dad and the administrator from day one (3 years). I can change other accounts. There accounts are limited.

    I ran Smitfraud and Hijackthis as asked. Windows clean up got stuck for 5 minutes using 98% CPU usage. I stopped it. Was that the correct thing to do?

    I think I'm not understanding something. When exactly does this window appear? Second, no it was not bad of to stop the cleanup, it's just something that is automatically started, I told you so you wouldn't think something was wrong. Question, after you ran Clean in safe mode, a log file should've opened up, did it say anything was cleaned or removed or deleted? Also, after the clean what problems remain? The butterfly in the window appears to be of MSN Messenger, so there might be an error there, but we'll find that in time if that's the case.

    Fix these in HJT and post a new log.

    Go here http://www.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/inst/ewido-setup_4.0.0.172c.exe and download ewido antimalware. Update it, then run a complete system scan. Save a log and post it.

    Now because there might be a problem in you Java, go to Control Panel, Java Plug-In, Cache, Clear. That will clear any infections you might've revieved from certain applications on websites.

    So repost those logs and we'll go from there.

    Did you select delete or quarantine after you scanned, or did it just not let you remove those problems? After scanning you have to select Apply All Actions.

    I did it all again, this time deleting items that ewido found. iremove the five items you mentioned in HJT.

    All the items in the second log have no action taken. Are you sure you have an action selected for each object before you click apply all actions?

    Sorry, The second log is actually the first time I did it. The programme quarintined the items. After your prompt, I deleted them and ran the 'first' log. So the did not show up on the first log as I had already deleted them.

    I am still not being recognised as an sdministrator by the windows website. Any ideas?

    Is it just by the website, because that may hint to an error in the Windows Authentication Tool which is used to correctly connect to the Windows websites.
    Is this the only problem at the moment or have any other things surfaced?

    No other problems at the moment. The problem I know have is that Trend Micro PCillin tells me, when I run a vunarability check, that I have these 'problems' and to update my windows. When I connect to the windows website (and I have tried several ways to connect to it) it says I am not the administrator. I can, however, update from the office update website.

    I honestly do not know what you can do from this point. Just to see what happens, create another administrator account and see if you can get updates.

    Method 4 I could not do as I could not fond the security tab.
    Method 5 Did not say where ityped the command prompt.
    So I stopped.

    What do you mean method 5, you didn't know where to type.
    If you're talking about the fact that you weren't in the right directory that's easily fixed.
    You just have to get yourself IN the right one.
    Now I don't know your computer setup, but I'll give you an example.
    You have to get in the System32 folder in your windows folder in your C drive(I asume).

    C:> <---you start out here.
    type cd windows
    That puts you here : C:\Windows>
    Then cd system32
    Then follow method 5.
    If that doesn't work try going one directory up by typing cd..(yes 2 periods) and try again.

    Now in the event that you actually start out in
    C:\Documents and Settings\(profile name)>
    Just simply type cd.. until you reach C:>

    Guys
    I tried the final method discribed on the Micorsoft website and it seems to have worked. I no longer get the message that I am not administrator. My computer is currently in happy conversation checking for updates.

    Thanks for yuor interest. I'll post a final log if all the updates get installed.
