please help! PC extremely slow, attacked by annoying popups,

Hi everyone,

this is the 2nd time i had to retype this msg, due to iexplorer mysteriously being unable to connect

2days ago i was infected with spyfalcon, i did a search in yahoo and followed the procedure to get rid of the annoying malware,
but somehow i know i am still infected by something.

My pc will get extremely slow sometimes even when cpu usage is under 10%(it took me 45mins to register to this website and post), im getting annoying popups when im browsing, also iexplorer sometimes cannot find the pages im looking for, i have to terminate the iexplorer process and retype the link in order for it to work, my pc also crashed a couple times, never happened before, i re-installed and reformatted my C drive 2 weeks ago so it should be pretty clean.

i did several scans with freewares and trial softwares, spybot, spyware doctor, panda antivirus, spy sweepy etc, it found alot of malware and fixed what was found but i know i am still infected.

the problem is getting pretty serious and i cannot keep on going like this!!!
someone please help me!

I will gladly provide you with all the information needed in order for you to remedy my situation.

thanks in advance guys....

    Please do this.
    Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

When the Notepad window opens, do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

now the pop-ups are replacing my browser's content,
the slowdown's still happens but are not as frequent.
also my windows folder is around 3gig??? without counting temp files.
    this is normal?????

also, when i do a search for running system processes like alg.exe, svchost.exe, csrss.exe, smss.exe etc, they all appear 3 times in 3 different location (but only 1 show up in the running processes):

    c:windows\system32
    c:windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
    c:windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

i dont think its normal right? i deleted a couple of them in safemode, especially csrss.exe, used to have it running twice eating all my memory....

anyways, i'll be waiting for you to tell me the next step to do,
    cheers bro

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
    1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    2. Once the setup is complete you will need to run ewido and update the definition files.
    3. On the main screen select the "Update" icon then click "Start Update". The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
    6. Under "Reports"
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware and reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
    1. Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.
    2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan"
    3. Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    4. Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it should automatically set the recommended action to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    5. Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
    6. Close ewido & post that report in your next reply

Hey Jmoney, I did as you instructed me to,
Ewido is awesome, first scan and it found 1 worm, 3-4 dialers and a couple of cookies.
Spybot, spydoctor, panda & spysweeper couldn't find any of these.

here is the report from the 2nd scan in safe mode (this scan took 3hrs!):
    ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report

    + Created at: 12:37:53 PM 9/17/2006

    + Scan result:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\efcawus.dll -> Adware.Virtumionde : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
    C:\Documents and Settings\Darkstarr\Cookies\darkstarr@adtech[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Adtech : Cleaned.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Darkstarr\Cookies\darkstarr@tacoda[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Tacoda : Cleaned.

    ::Report end

I shouldve saved the first scan, there was more information...

After the ewido cleanup, so far there's no more pop-ups,
but i think its still slower than usual and the "microsoft visual c++ runtime library" error that causes explorer to disapear and restart is still occuring...

thanks again jmoney for all the help,
let me know whats next to do.
also this nice lady named rpggamergirl pm'ed me with the following instruction:

    "Hi,

Please excuse me for disturbing you, I just registered and not quite sure how this forum works so i thought I'll just pm you instead of posting in your thread.

I saw your Hijackthis log and it shows a smitfraud infection. It also shows that something is hiding there.

    1. Please download SmitfraudFix:
    http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by rebooting the computer,
and repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the pc starts. Choose "Safe Mode" from
    the options listed.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected
    files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the
registry?" answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove
the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the
    infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to
replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press
    "Enter".

    The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process;
if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

    2. After you run Smitfraud fix, please rename your hijackthis.exe into something.exe or any.exe(whatever name you like)
Some nasty is monitoring hijackthis.exe process and is hiding from the scan. After you renamed Hijackthis, scan your system with that renamed .exe and post its log please. The culprit should show up then."

Rpggirl, I followed your instructions and here is my hijackthis log after the smitfraud scan:

I think the ones highlighted are the bad guys, Ewido tried blocking Efcawus.dll but it kept on coming back.

also whats weird, is that i performed a 2nd scan after closing Panda antivirus right after the first scan, and there was more item showing up:

good job on the ewido hades, however yes you do have smitfraud infection (which I was going to get at later:wink: ) but you shouldn't follow the advice from forum members (or anyone for that matter) who don't have training/knowledge in malware removal using HJT as doing so can actually do more harm than good so I ask you follow only my, or 1 of the other qualified spyware experts advice from here on out on this forum or anyother HJT forum for that matter..no biggie tho:smiles: ...but since you ran the smitfraud could you please post the log from the smitfraud scan in your next reply along with new HJT Log

    (again hisooo.exe is hjt)

As you can see in the running processes, panda antivirus' components were mysteriously uninstalled...
Tried re-installing the components thru the app but pressing the buttons only launches a new process but nothing happens.

Also, explorer and iexplorer are acting real strange:

explorer: sometimes the desktop will blink, keep getting the "microsoft visual c++" error,
    also getting:
["the instruction at "0x01643812" referenced memory at "0x0170fe8"
the memory could not be read"]
launching app or setups will sometime hang...

iexplorer: iexplorer sometimes blink on and off, popup asking to install language packages, clicking on links sometimes doesn't work, auto-complete in address bar sometimes doesn't work... real strange....

i noticed these processes to be appearing and disapearing:
    hldrrr.exe
did a search and it is a comfirmed spyware
    imapi.exe
    trojan??
    verclsid.exe
ms update component, found to be a problem to alot of users in this thread:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15875820~days=9999~start=20
some experiencing problems with this process are showing the same symptoms as me...

i did not delete or rename anything so far, waiting for your instructions jmoney!

    cheers man

good job on the smitfraudfix you also have the vundo trojan please do the following:Please download VundoFix.exe
    to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
    VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
