Opera vs. Firefox

ok folks, i am a fairly diehard opera user, but i have recently been thrust into the world of firefox because gmail does not support opera as of yet (but they are supposed to when gmail officially launches). so, what i wanted to know, is if any folks that use either of these browsers (or any others i suppose (if you mention ie = BAND!!1)) would like to compare and contrast.

welp, what do people think?

I like Opera a lot. Mozilla was the first alternative I tried (well, other than neo planet, hehe) but that was before Firefox. I tried Opera and hated it but came back about a year later just to see how things had gone and have used the browser since. Loving every new release, its a very stable browser and is really nice to use.

Update: been using Firefox ever since the original post of the thread, and I must say I like it!! the transition from IE to Firefox was sweet & simple. I love how it tabs things instead of piling things up in the task bar. I do have to say that some things pages seem to load a we bit slower, but its not realy a big deal. Thats my .02 cents.

Personally, I use firefox, but for a many good reason.

1) I used to use opera, but I eventually went on a guilt trip about stealing software (my key was stolen). I am a poor college kid and couldn't afford to pay for my web broswer so I had IE for a bit (firefox wasn't out yet). The best thing about opera is how you can left to right click or right to left click to go forward and back- Either way... opera is great but it costs money.

2) Since that time of my life I have come to love opensource and everything it stands for. I love how anybody can look at / modify / find flaws in code. It is basically an emergent system that creates the best possible software humanity could create... that is if everyone would just get into it. Firefox is free and opensource.

3) I am unsure of Opera's status, but as a webdesigner I cannot stand stuff that does not cohere to standards.. Firefox coheres to standards.

4) The main advantage of opera.. that being that it is fast... has become negligible cause my computer could launch a 400mb gorilla just as fast as two web browsers who are both light on system resources.

5) If you use multiple-platforms. (i use linux, windows, and osx on regular basises) Firefox is available on all of em... So you have a good amount of consistency and thus maintain effecient web browsing. Not to mention all the config files are compatible. I checked to see if its compatible (opera) with osx, and it looks kinda shadey... MacOS... I assume that means pre unix based macos... I never have run that so it doesn't help me.

The fact is they are both awesome web browsers and both deserve a harty hand of applause.. It is just circumstance which dictates which ones you use.

Come on

If any of you thinks that Firefox is FASTER that opera, you havent used Opera even once!

I have tried Opera on many PC's, and it always beats Firefox in terms of speed.

Besides, now that Opera is FREE, (as in Free Beer), you dont have an excuse for trying it.

In 4 MB, you have an Email client (works great with my gmail account), an excellent web browser, and a IRC client. You can uninstall MIRC now

Opera Rulez by now

(it even has a version of the Web Developer Toolbar)

I've been using Firefox for about a year, and I like it. I've never been a fan of IE, ever since Micro$oft made it an integral part of the OS. When they did that, they we're basically saying they want to monopolize the Internet.

I've tried Opera, but that was several years ago, and at the time it looked like a clone of IE, so I didn't care for it. I'm sure it's changed quite a bit since then, and it might be worth looking at again.

Firefox is a nice alternative in that it seems to work with most webpages and sites, supports most plug-ins (or at least the ones I use), has tabbed browsing which can be nice (but honestly I don't use tabs as much because opening a new window is just as easy), and it's a stand-alone fairly fast working app.

Every once in a great while I'll run into an incompatibility issue with some website trying to do something super funky, but most of the time I have no problems.

No excuse with opera now? No excuse ever. *caugh* kazaa *caugh*

In terms of speed, your internet is the biggest issue there, not the browser, then after internet, just the upkeep of your computer so people who actually have spyware/adware/etc crap (do people actually have this stuff?) are going to get slow, then after that I would guess your hard drive limits you, not so much new ones but older slower ones maybe 5400 or less rpm are really going to hurt, and I'm sure the list goes on...

And also, my biggest pet peeve about fire fox is that I am used to opening a new window and it having saved the same info from the window I opened it from, for example:
I open IE, home page is set to yahoo.com then I go to google.com then I search for "Icrontic geeks talking about browser speed" and incur no results so I go check my email and sign in, then I open a second IE window from there and hit the back button twice on my mouse and I am right back to the google search I did to modify that.
In Firefox a new window/tab doesn't even go to your homepage, dispicable!

My biggest problem with Firefox is Gecko. Its slow as fuck, and not even a hardcore Firefox user can deny that.
