The Ol' Goat is heading back home to the mountains of the great land.

After almost 10 years in the Texas heat i am heading back to Alaska. I am planning on driving the 4,156 miles from just north of Austin, Tx to Anchorage, Ak. The plan is to head out of here on Wednesday March 11 and arrive in Anchorage sometime Monday March17. I have enjoyed my stay here but home calls to my inner being!

Leo's waiting for the Goat! Larry, there's Moose's Tooth ale and stout in the fridge, halibut from Resurrection Bay in the freezer, and my wife is an awesome cook!

Welcome home! I can't wait till you get here. Come on over and we'll drink a cup of coffee on the deck and look out on Herdy Gerdy peak and Eagle River Glacier.

Lets see, my route will take me through Ft. Worth, Amarillo, Denver, Billings Montana, Calgary, Edmonton, Whitehorse and into Alaska. I also expect it to be full blown winter once I get past Denver. It will likely be snowing quite a bit all through canada and into Alaska.

If anyone is along the route and wants to get together for some coffe let me know. I would also not mind meeting with anyone in the Austin area before I depart.

Just for kicks, can you post the google maps route if you've mapped one?

I want some perspective.

It is! MtGoat and I have done it multiple times. I've driven it from southern Arizona and from Georgia. Once you get past the populated places and road congestion, it's a wonderful drive, if you enjoy the open spaces. City people might not enjoy it so much.

Slacker! See what being a safety supervisor did to you! OK, I understand, you haven't yet geared up for winter. I'd be cautious, too.

Speaking of which, have you changed out your motor oil and coolant for cold weather operation? Don't forget. You never know what temperatures you might encounter in northern BC, Yukon, and Interior Alaska. You know all this, but it can't hurt to remind you.

We have mild weather now - around 32F. I don't know what's predicted for a week from now. They've had near record snowfall in the Interior this winter but I haven't heard of any of the passes being closed.

When I bought my car last summer I had them switch all my lubricants to full synthetics. I have been a real beleiver in the synthetics for hot and cold weather. So when I had my car serviced on Friday I made sure to tell them to make sure the coolant was good to at least -40F and they used the same synthetic oil I have been using.

Thanks for the weather links!

He is borrowing the computer from Capt. Kirk.

The car is gassed, loaded and parked in the garage for a 6:00AM lift off.

Thumbs up Say hi to Alaska for me

Larry, it was great to talk to you again! It's funny how I'm currently begining my first build, my right of passage if you will...and 15 minutes after my psu and harddrive arrive via ups from newegg, you call!

Wow I haven't seen you since 99'. Great decade I'd like to add. Well I'm sure your Texas friends will miss you very much, you were very kind to my family and I when we first moved up to Alaska back in 96'. I don't know where we would have lived that first winter if you had not let us stay in your homestead cabin. You made me feel very welcomed around your home and property and I'll always remember. awwww yeah I said what I had to say ok manly man time...

I'll pm cell#/email. I'll let you know how the build goes. So far my powersupply is mounted, harddrive is caged. Once ups delivers my heatsink/fan it's a greenlight. A few days ago I ordered a XIGMATEK HDT-S963 92mm Rifle CPU Cooler and that was before I even knew it was a brand you recommend.

Enjoy Alaska again! Hopefully you didn't tell to many people down in the states about the special "checks" that the state sends in the mail around october...lol it sucks to imagine that soon you'll be referring to all of us down here as flatlanders, tourists, and lower 48'ers

Best wishes, your former Alaskan neighbor

He's way north of there and ain't going back. He's got limited time to traverse the whole continent. As Thursday evening he was about 150 miles south of Denver. He hopes to be at the US-Canada border Saturday noon.

He was just south of the US-Canada border (Montana - Alberta) when we last spoke two days ago. He's no doubt way up in northern British Columbia about now. Most of that route is quite rural, so his cellular access may be poor or non-existent through much of the area.

I just got into Anchorage late last night!
The past 2 1/2 days I had no cell phone coverage and got to Edmonton, Alberta Saturday night. Then I hit lots of snow and slippery roads most of the day Sunday and ended the day in Ft. Nelson, B.C. I got an early start Monday and hit -37F temps till about noon. I finished the day at Haines junction, Yukon Territory.

When I got to the Canada border I was in for a big shocker! Here I am a clean cut mid 50's guy in a new car that I jst washed about 60 miles earlier and was asked to go inside by the woman at the window at customs. After entering and going to the assigned counter I was asked literally 100 questions and asked to have a seat while they did a security check. about 20 minutes later I was then TOLD AND NOT ASKED NICELY to give them my keys and follow them to the inspection area. There they asked my to have a seat in a plexiglass booth where I saw my car driven inside the inspection area and stripped of its contents, all boxes eptied, the wheels, spare tire and air cleaner removed from my car, my computer taken to a desk where they inspected it. They also took all my papers, photographs and slides and looked at them all one by one. This whole process took about 4 hours while I was locked inside a booth watching. They haphazardly replaced the boxes and packed my car. I saw some stuff get crunched when the right rear door was closed. So when they told my I was clear to enter Canada I went and opened the door and found items of a dear personal nature broken!!! I asked about it and was told to get in my car and leave and have a good day, eh.

It isn't too surprising that driving from a southern-border state up to Canada would raise some eyebrows. Doesn't excuse them being a bunch of assholes, though.

We had lunch together in town (Anchorage) this afternoon. This took me by surprise today, as I wasn't expecting Mt_Goat here yet, so no photo. He'll probably visit me at my home this weekend, so we should be able make a picture for the forums.

I waited nearly an hour to enter Canada while they rifled through the entire contents of my camera, computer, and searched my car end-to-end. Afterward, I had to speak with immigration to let me into the country.

Well I'm going to overclock my cpu now. I mean... I'm going to spend some time on the icrontic overclocking forum before I make such a choice.

Hey, don't knock a country because of a customs agency. Most countries don't have customs that people remember fondly.
