The 2009 Tastes of Detroit Food Tour - Shilla

FRIDAY, JUNE 26th, 2009:
Shilla

Several years back, I had the fortune to become good friends with an older Korean couple. On several occasions, they invited my family to dine with them at a Korean restaurant, and through an introduction they made, I was also able to eat homemade Korean food at another family's house, where 80+ year old halmuhnee (Grandma) made a wonderful meal for us. It really opened my eyes to how delicious and varied the Korean cuisine was.

Throughout the years I was close with this couple, one name kept coming up. "Shilla" they told me. "Go to Shilla one day". I never went because it was slightly out of my normal travel radius, there were great Korean restaurants closer to me, and it sort of fell off my radar.

Well, one day I went.

I regret not going sooner.

Shilla is a slightly upscale Korean/Japanese restaurant that serves sushi as well as the gamut of traditional Korean food. Those who went with us to New Seoul Garden during the 2007 Food Tour will be excited to know that everything you had there is available here, and it is delicious and amazing. The traditional "cook-at-your-table" Bulgogi will be available as well; there is nothing quite like making your own lettuce wraps with marinated meat that is cooking at your table, with a variety of banchan arrayed out before you; it encourages tasting, sampling, and enjoying.

Korean dining encourages community; what better fit for Icrontic?
