Gaming Resolution

An interesting thought I had following a conversation with someone earlier today

Why is high resolution gaming considered "better" and is it in your opinion??

Is 1024x768 the ideal resolution? Even with a 19" monitor? What do you think?

I game at 1280x1024 because I assume thats the best for a 19" monitor, the truth is Im not sure why.

What do you think?

I game (and work) at 1280x1024 on my 17" TFT. When I had a 15" monitor, I used 1024x768 but on 17" and above it just looks huge and fugly. The thing I prefer about higher resolutions is that you get more screen space, so the chat panel can display more, and still be smaller than a 800x600 panel.

1600x1200 on my 21" if I can manage.

1280x1024 on my 19".

Best game resolution is the highest one you can go and still keep things "smooth" in my opinion. More screen real estate and everything is crisper.

Well, with LCDs, the screen resolution is kinda set, and any other resolution is "faked", so on my LCD I always game at the native resolution. On CRTs, its either 1024x768 or 1280x1024.

I try to go with a combo of highest possible refreshrate and resolution. NEVER less than 85 hz, but i always try to have at least 100 hz. My 19 incher does 120 hz at 1024*768 which is fine by me. I like FPS at less resolution and racing at higher so it depends a lot on which game it is. Try playing a golfgame on 19 incher at 1600*1200, you need binoculars to even see the swingmeter.

I always do at least 1024x768@100Hz on my monitor, it just depends on the game.

I think it depends on the game. Additionally, the mouse responds much differently at certain resolutions. I find the one that offers the best gaming, not necessarily the best visuals. If I can aquire targets quicker at 1024x768 than at 1600x1200, then I use that resolution. I usually run 800x600 or 1024x768 on my 19" monitor. 800x600 seems to work better for older first person shooters, like Half-Life.

I always game at 1024x768, which actually isn't my 17inch TFT's native resolution. I know one guy who refuses to play a game in anything higher than 800x600 (he has a 17inch CRT). He says if the resolution is any higher, everythings too small. I rasied my eyebrow and left it at that.

1024x768..its a nice resolution. I play alot of racing games and going higher lowers the frame rate below what i like, especially when an accident happens. Course I could get me an 9800pro, but im just a poor man

I try to get the best FPS/Refresh rate/DPI combo as I can get (either 1024x768, or 1280x1024 for most any current game). For most of the newer FPS games (such as UT2K3) I keep it at 1024x768, as the larger games tend to get choppy.

Also a refresh rate above 90 is very important to me, but with my new p1100, that’s most any available rez. ;P

my brother's both play CS pretty competitively and they swap between 640x480 and 1024x768. Don't ask me why they need a GF4 and XP 2100+ to play @ 640x480 ... they could probably get 1000 fps.

Personally I play at 1920x1200 on games that support it and 1600x1200 on everything else. Everyone looks sorta fat but that makes them easier targets! (1920x1200 is native on my LCD).

On my CRT I play at 1280x960 ... i never got the 1280x1024 stuff as its not the common 4:3 aspect ratio. It makes everything look skinny to me (ie harder to shoot). I keep on Vsync and run at the highest refresh rate possible.

On this machine, I've always had Windows set to utilize 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz on the Samsung SyncMaster 750s.

Gaming resolutions are set at 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz when the game can handle it, or I scale back to 1024x768 @ 75 Hz.

Why such a low refresh Simguy? For me, anything below 100Hz in the Windows desktop makes my eyes bleed. With games I can tolerate lower, but I begin to notice tairing, especially in FPSes.

Besides, why not always max out the monitor's available refresh rate? From what I know, there's really no reason not to.

I should also note that my 21" monitor does 90hz at 1600x1200, and my 19" does 90Hz at 1280x1024

It's a very cheap monitor. It supports 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz only and 1024x768 @ 75 Hz only.

I'm so used to using 60 Hz on the desktop that it doesn't bother my eyes at all. I utilize a 60 Hz resolution on my PC @ work & @ home.

I run any game that'll support it (and which is playable @ it) @ 2048x1536/80Hz

Everything else depends on what resolutions the game supports and what it's playable at. I prefer at least 1280x1024, 1600x1200 or more is ideal though.

Yes my resolution is at 60Hz. If I put it any higher my eyes water.

For playing games like wolfenstein or UT2K3 i usually go with 1024x768 with settings on high or medium, with my 19" monitor running at 90 Hz. Anything higher and the boost in resolution isn't worth the slow down in playing

1024x768 @ 70 as that 72 is max for my POS monitor and 1024 is max for my POS monitor

Defiinately the higher the better, as long as the frames per second doesnt drop below 30-35. I get up to 1920x1200 on the lappy if the games support it. Picture looks much more crisp...

Its kind of like HDTV vs Regular TV. whhich would you rather have?

14" = 800x600
15" = 1024x768
17" = 1280x1024
19" = 1600x1200
21" = 2048x1536

Though my POS 15" wont go higher than 85hz at any res. Managed to `overclock` it to 69hz (from 60) @ 1024x768 using powerstrip though, which makes a large difference.
