mmmmmm... Hot Vernors....

Am I the only one? I am drinking a nice glass of hot Vernors right now, microwaved to perfection to a nice toasty pre-boil. People tend to flip out if they hear "hot" and "vernors" in the same sentence.

I grew up drinking this stuff whenver I was sick or couldn't sleep. Is it a local thing? I know Vernors was originally from Detroit.. Is it a polish thing? It's something my grandma used to do for my mom too, I know that much.

Am I alone in this satisfying practice?

I guess it is a Michigan thing.

Some people call it "Medicine Pop"... It's ginger ale, but it's different. It's.... well, it's unique... I love it, I grew up with it, and a warm glass of vernors is really nice when you have an upset stomach or can't sleep.

Cool not too different than the 7up that my grandma gave us when we were sick... Although I don't remember it being heated... According to the site its supposed to be available in the Seattle market, I'll have to try to find it and try it. I do like Canada Dry Ginger Ale anyway so I'm sure that I'll like it...

It's vaguely ginger-ish... There's a saying:

You can tell your a michigander if a sip of vernor's doesn't send you into a coughing fit...

It's ... umm.. VERY sharp and fizzy... I love it...

I can associate with 7up, from when i was a kid, never heard of Vernors.
Discription is more like "Jack's". Now that would make you sleep.

No particular reason other than it tastes nice and the nutritional info is just a giant zero.

Vernor's is nice, never tried it heated though.

And Prime's right: It's got the most immediate bite of almost any pop I've ever tried.

The type of soda that vernors is is called 'ginger beer'. My father loves ginger beer and stocks several varieties that he goes to specialty stores to pick up. Thusly, I grew up with it too, but I think your family are the only crazy people who heat the stuff.

Indeed we do have Vernor's down here in Cincy. Never tried it though. May have to go to Kroger and pick some up if it comes so highly recommended by Prime.

Same here. It's a good drink. Never even thought of drinking it hot.

I'd describe it as a "spicey'er" ginger ale.

Bahhh... you guys.....

Vernors is NOT ginger beer. Ginger Beer is a totally different drink. Trust me on this, I am a ginger beer fanatic.

Vernors is barely ginger ale. It's not very vanilla-ey, but it is spicey, sort of cinnamon... oh never mind... If you really want to know, put it up to the test: Order some online if you have to, and heat it up and try it yourself. You'll love it.

You local yokels have no excuse. Heat it up and try it.

Ok so I was in the store for lunch today and I came across a bottle of Vernors, picked it up to give it a try.

I was suprised by the taste at first.

Definately not the normal ginger ale.

I found that when cold for me it was a tase that I would have to get used to... However poped it in the microwave and boy what a difference. It's a lot better hot than cold to me.

Only one thing... how do you keep it from creating a sticky mess, when it gets hot, the fuzz speus all over stuff...?

I am all about the artificial sweeteners.
Remember all those years when smoking was ok? Remeber when smoking was considered absolutely healthy. Remember when the head of a major cancer institution said "A pack a day keeps lung cancer away"? Few years go by, "O Sh*t!" We were wrong. I see myself as the guy who realizes how bad the artificial sweeteners are.
Thrax, are you being serious? Remember when I talked you on AOL awhile back? We talked about someone who is bi-polar. You accused me of being full of sh*t because that person was never around any "toxins". Does that person like fake sugar too? If they do, just so know, artificial sweeteners are neuro-toxic. As in......neuro transmission.

hey, I call it medicine pop. It tastes like someone mixed ginger ale and listerine. Whenever I drink that swill I have to get all ready for it, like I'm taking a shot of liquor or something. I was even forced to drink it hot as a kid. It's like a folk remedy or something, "drink this and you'll stop puking" ...gross.

Oh yeah? What's with this "Tea Time" thing?

One or two Americans have asked me why the English like tea so much, which never seems to them to be a very good drink. To understand, you have to make it properly.

There is a very simple principle to the making of tea, and it’s this—to get the proper flavour of tea, the water has to be boilING (Not boilED) when it hits the tea leaves. If it’s merely hot, then the tea will be insipid. That’s why we English have these odd rituals, such as warming the teapot first (so as no to cause the boiling water to cool down too fast as it hits the pot). And that’s why American habit of bringing a teacup, a tea bag, and a pot of hot water to the table is merely the perfect way of making a thin, pale, watery cup of tea that nobody in their right mind would want to drink. The Americans are all mystified about why the English make such a big thing out of tea because most Americans HAVE NEVER HAD A GOOD CUP OF TEA. That’s why they don’t understand. In fact, the truth of the matter is that most English people don’t know how to make tea anymore either, and most people drink cheap instant coffee instead, which is a pity, and gives Americans the impression that the English are just generally clueless about hot stimulants.

So the best advice I can give to an American arriving in England is this: Go to Marks and Spencer and buy a packet of Earl Grey tea. Go back to where you’re staying and boil a kettle of water. While it is coming to the boil, open the sealed packet and sniff. Careful---you may feel a bit dizzy, but this is in fact perfectly legal. When the kettle has boiled, pour a little of it into a teapot, swirl it around, and tip it out again. Put a couple (or three, depending on the size of the pot) of tea bags into the pot. (If I was really trying to lead you into the paths of righteousness, I would tell you to use free leaves rather than bags, but let’s just take this in easy stages.) Bring the kettle back up to the boil, and then pour the boiling water as quickly as you can into the pot. Let is stand for two or three minutes, and then pour it into a cup. Some people will tell you that you shouldn’t have milk with Earl Grey, just a slice of lemon. Screw them. I like it with milk. If you think you will like it with milk, then it’s probably best to put some milk into the bottom of the cup before you pour in the tea. If you pour milk into a cup of hot tea, you will scald the milk. If you think you will prefer it with a slice of lemon, then, well, add a slice of lemon.

Drink it. After a few moments you will begin to think that the place you’ve come to isn’t maybe quite so strange and crazy after all.
