The Mozilla Foundation has submitted a release candidate for the 1.0 release of its Thunderbird e-mail client. Thunderbird is intended to be a competitor to Microsoft’s Outlook Express (OE) e-mail client, which comes installed on all versions of Windows.

Thunderbird offers better security than OE, as well as features that only appear in more powerful e-mail clients like Microsoft Outlook. Thunderbird is not really prepared to compete with all of the various e-mail clients that users can purchase, but the development team is focused more on the needs of OE and other free client users. The next-generation client is also taking aim at users who have migrated to webmail in search of better security.

The Thunderbird 1.0 release candidate contains many bug fixes and feature improvements, including adaptive spam filters, saved search folders, and RSS support. It is available for download and testing by all interested geeks at Mozilla’s website.
