Clever Clock Stops You Sleeping Late

Research associate Gauri Nanda’s two-wheeled “Clocky” automatically rolls off the bedside table when the alarm goes off and the snooze button is pressed.

It travels around the room and its carpet-covered surface bumps into objects that come into its path, until it finds a resting place.

“Minutes later, when the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search for Clocky,” says the 25-year-old scientist.

“This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning it off.”

An internal processor helps it find a new hiding spot every day.

I don’t think I could get use to hunting the little bugger every morning. I’d rather spend the energy on procrastinating.

OMG, I want one so bad. If not for the alarm, just for the fact that I'll have an alarm that rolls around.

That has got to be the weirdest thing I've seen in a while. It looks like a guinea pig with wheels sitting there.

Oh, I'd go hunting for clocky, alright. I think that little punk would end up getting stabbed or smashed when I found it. I don't have too much of a sense of humor in the morning

i don't get snooze alarms in the first place. i don't need an alarm gettin me up a half hour early. i agree this would be a search and destroy mission on day one!

I don't do snooze alarms either. I'm up on the first alarm, it's the only way to go.

College has made my understanding of the snooze button that much more profound.

I haven't used the alarm on my bedside clock in years. Over the years, I've noticed that every time I did use the alarm, I automatically woke up 5-15 minutes before it went off. So I tried just telling myself what time I want to wake up, now I'm usually within 5-10 minutes of that time.

I've been getting up at 5:30 am to go to the gym before work for 3 years now. I can count the times I've overslept on one hand. On occasions I have changed my mind about going to the gym, I still woke up around 5:30, then decided the gym wasn't going to happen that day, and slept for a little longer, still without using an alarm.

Do you have to find them after that, or do they usually hide in the same spot?
