AMD ups ultra-thin ante with next-gen “Conesus”

amd_logoAMD has begun to reveal select details about Conesus, a processor intended for the firm’s efforts in cultivating the value ultra-thin class of sub-notebooks.

The new processor will lie at the heart of AMD’s upcoming Congo platform, the package of core hardware that will succeed the Athlon Neo MV-40, Radeon X1200/X3410 and ATI RS690E chipset featured in the Yukon platform used by products like the HP dv2.

The Conesus will harness a 45nm process for boosted L2 cache, higher frequencies and a second core, a feature notably absent from netbook CPUs like the Atom N270. The natural performance advantage of AMD’s value ultra-thin processors married to a second processing core should offer a significant performance lead over netbook products.

Our sources tell us that the Conesus will be paired with the AMD 780G chipset and the entire package should start appearing in products early in the second half of 2009.

I think I know what sort of netbook/ultra-thin I want to take to CES 2010. These specs sound delicious.

  2. , I want to kick my Wind to the curb for one of these. The performance makes me tingle.

I know what I'm expecting for Christmas. I decided to pull the plug on a netbook from my wishlish list last year. Now its on! I'm tired of lugging around a 15.4" around, especially at airports.

The things my Wind will not do:

    Play 720p video
    Record 2mp webcam video

These are clearly CPU issues. I am excited for more performance in this form factor.

This product really gets it right. Its the right blend of portable, productive, and entertaining. Its going to do everything most users will desire in a portable while maintaining a form factor that's reasonable to manage.

I sold my Wind because I was not happy with Intel. I have only ever had and will only ever have... AMD
I'm looking very forward to Conesus!
