Corsair launches 650w modular PSU

Helping to end the absolute dearth of high-quality modular PSUs in the 600w range, Corsair has just launched a 650w modular unit.

Dubbed the HX650W, the new unit features an 85%+ Bronze efficiency rating and all the necessary connectors for a modern SLI/CrossFire system.

“The Corsair HX650W is ideal for enthusiasts and gamers who are looking for a highly efficient, quiet, modular power supply, but don’t need the higher wattages offered by the other PSUs in the Professional Series” said Jim Carlton, VP of Marketing at Corsair.

We agree. Most do not need the 700w (or more) being flogged for those who happen to want modularity. The HX650W should offer tremendous price/performance with great convenience, which makes it a good idea for new enthusiast builds.

   No it isn't. The whole system is called "80+." It comes in Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum levels. Bronze is 85%+, while Gold is 90 or 92%+. Platinum is even higher. The whole thing is called 80+ because all the rating levels are above 80%.

   Getting a continuous 650 watts at 85% efficiency is extremely fine. In fact, its better than fine, its pretty freakin sweet.

   I would be highly interested... if I hadn't just bought an OCZ 600W modular when my mobo died the other month =/ Still nice looking power supply though.

   What's wrong with installing a 700 watt unit if someone can't find a slightly smaller size? A 700 will be under less load and therefore less likely to have problems.

    Power supplies operate less efficiently when they're routinely under-utilizing their capabilities.

    It's also about 150w too much for the average system, and that means it's 150 watts worth of wasted money.

    I found it on Newegg.com for $140, how's it compare to OCZ's $100 700W or their $80 600W PSU's?

    My only issue with the 650w modular version is the fact that Corsair already has a 620w modular version. I am a proud owner of its baby 520w brother.
