Intel cuts prices

Intel cut prices today for some popular chips. Here’s the breakdown:

Core 2 Quads

  • Q6600 is now $193, down 14 percent.

Core 2 Duos

  • E8500 is now $183, down a staggering 31 percent.
  • E8400 is now $163, down 11 percent.
  • E7200 is now $113, down 15 percent.

Xeons

  • X3220 is now $198, down 12 percent.
  • X3210 is now $198, down 12 percent, making the above a better value.
  • E3110 is now $167, down 11 percent.

Everything else stays the same, sadly. Reports are circulating that some of the major retailers haven’t applied the price cuts yet, so those of you shopping for new chips may want to hold out a few days until the cuts take hold.

    Now this is really good. Now lets see if AMD can afford to match with a price drop, considering the Q6600 is now cheaper than a 9850 ($5 cheaper on this date, retail).

    Q6600 is now $193, down 14 percent.

    That is a tremendous value for anyone who does intense multi-tasking. The Q6600 still can duke it out with processors much newer and costing significantly more.

    E7200 is now $113, down 15 percent.

    Holy moly! Makes me wish my friend still wanted me to build him a new computer. Add $35 for 'value' 2GB DDR800 and a $75 P35 motherboard, and you have a very snappy barebones.

    Thrax isn't gloating, he's just casting a metaphor for what may come to pass. I seriously doubt AMD will disappear, but I give 50/50 odds that in five years it won't be the same company we know today.

    You just never know. There is big money out there that may be just waiting for a fire sale...and they may just get it. I'm optimistic. I don't think our future has only one maker of high end processors.

    I really hope so. Competition and innovation go hand-in-hand on this one. Of course the cost factors in there somewhere.

    No, AMD will never go away. Even if they're a beautiful company that got driven into the ground on a train fueled by $600bn USD in investor dollars, their IP is too valuable to disappear.

    Yes, like the oh-so divine Leo Laporte once said, AMD should be appreciated alone for even providing the competition for Intel, thus forcing innovation for the better of all procs.
