Microsoft releasing free anti-virus in 2009

In a surprising move, Microsoft has decided to offer a free anti-virus solution in lieu of its OneCare service to be eliminated in 2009.

One has to wonder exactly what spurred Microsoft to move in this direction. We suspect that Microsoft may be looking to gain a valuable piece of good will with the free AV crowd.

Having read some of the comments on the article linked (yeah, I know...shudder) I think it's ridiculous how some people think that anti-virus software can be nixed by "just making the OS more secure". This is never going to happen. Sometimes its easier to release an AV update to make sure its protected and then patch the security hole.

LOL, would you pay for OneCare? It's one of the worst rated anti-virus apps available not to mention almost all the other things in OneCare Live are already in Windows they just made links to make it easier to find.... 50.00 for the worst a/v out there and short cuts to apps already on your system.... It should be free LOL.
