Rumor: Google to release its own Android phone

Android-logo-featheredPotentially upsetting the mobile phone status quo, it’s rumored that Google could be releasing their own android phone, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who has talked to Google’s design partners about the plan. The phone, which will be available this year, is going to be released through retailers and not through a cell phone carrier.

Bypassing carriers will allow Google to give consumers an open-standard mobile device, something they have pledged to accomplish. Having an unlocked phone will give users far more control over the capabilities of their phones than if bought through a carrier.

The Android phone and the upcoming Chrome netbook will use Qualcomm chips, specifically the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform. Analysts are speculating that HTC will manufacture the Android phone, and the Linux based Chrome netbook will be released next summer by computer maker Quanta.

Depending on the price of Google’s phone, it could have widespread impact upon the sales of existing Android phones.  Many companies are currently releasing Android phones, banking upon the OS as being a major selling point. Motorola/Verizon, for example, are releasing a razor thin Android phone named “Droid” in the near future, which they are expecting to be a serious competitor with the iPhone.

Skeptics doubt that Google’s phone will be ready in time for the holiday season, but it could be making its way into lots of lovely presents if it is.

An unlocked Snapdragon-based HTC Android device running an unmodified ROM could be very compelling, but I doubt it will have much impact on the Android market at large.

A smartphone of that caliber would easily cost north of $600, which is quite enough to scare most people into accepting a carrier subsidy and the limitations that sometimes go with it.

    I love golllllld!

Sounds excellent. It'll be nice to put some serious pressure on the iPhone, which to me still seems unphased by android's encroachment on their territory.

But will it be enough to make me switch sides?

    We can't stop here...

I love my G1, and I'm totally sold on Android. If I can afford it, I'd be really tempted to buy a slick Snapdragon-based phone. I just doubt I'd be able to without the carrier subsidy.

I'm actually excited about Droid coming to Verizon. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the BB, especially with Exchange syncing out of the box.

I'm also looking foward to see which would prove to be the better mobile OS for the Snapdragon- Windows vs Android.

I'm just like Garg. I love my G1, but am more in love with Android. The G1's processor is starting to show its age in certain apps on the new version of Android, but the platform itself has a great deal of potential.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Now that I'm hooked, I'd consider upgrading to something snappier. I could probably hold out until my contract is up and I get a discount either from T-mo or a different carrier, though.

I hate to burst the Rumor bubble here, but this is HIGHLY unlikely to be true. Kumar and Moritz seem to have a history of being wrong and/or making shit up. I'm inclined to believe the Phandroid article about this, mostly because I've been reading that site for quite a while and they are usually right on about these things.

Hey, be nice. Icrontic is full of good people, we promise.
