Seagate unleashes 1.5TB desktop hard drives

Seagate today announced a new high in storage technology, as they pushed their perpendicular recording technology to produce a 1.5TB desktop hard disk, with 4 platters at 375GB each. The drive, called the Barracuda 7200.11, will spin at 7200rpm, deliver its content via the standard SATA 3.0GB/s interface in bursts up to 120MB/s, can pack 16 or 32 bits of cache, and may still save you up to 43 percent in power consumption.

That’s not their only news on the day, however, as they’re also announcing two new 2.5″ laptop form-factor 500GB drives. These drives will split between the Momentus 5400.6 and the Momentus 7200.4, and while the obvious difference is rotational speed, the 5400.6 will also have a smaller 8MB cache compared to the 7200.4’s 16MB. Both will use SATA 3.0GB/s connections, and have shock protection for 350Gs while operating and 1000 while powered down, and can be purchased with Seagate’s G-Force Protection technology to add another layer of preventative medicine. Seagate also calls the 7200.4 a power-efficient drive that will improve your battery life.

The behemoth 1.5TB drive is set to ship starting August of this year, while the laptop drives will go out in the fourth calendar quarter; pricing is as yet unknown.
