Gadgets’n'Gizmos Thursday

It’s Thursday, and that means, er, nothing. But we do have gadgets for you!

  • The BlackBerry Storm reviews are starting to hit the web. All sources indicate that it’s good, but not yet ready to slay the incumbent iPhone. Cue the “rains on RIM’s parade” jokes.
  • It’s rare that new developments in the flash drive arena amount to more than new capacities, new colors or some new-fangled encryption scheme. Yet Kanguru has managed to deliver the goods by releasing a flash drive with an eSATA connection for superior throughput.
  • Packard Bell is back with a netbook. Everyone grab your warranties.
  • Meet Roofus, the beastly robot that plows snow like it ain’t no thang. We, for one, accept our new robot overlords.

Gadgets and gizmos Wednesday

Aside from RIM’s official unveiling of the Storm, not much is at play in the world of gadgets today. Nevertheless, here are a few links to get you started:

  • Harnessing the power of frickin’ laser beams for 20Gbps terrestrial wireless? 10Gbps at 800m? Daddy like!
  • Just in case you haven’t heard, Intel released the Core 2 Duo E7300 and E5200 some weeks back. While you probably wouldn’t want to court the E5200, the 7xxx series is rather a fantastic bargain.
  • RIM’s BlackBerry Storm was officially unveiled. It supports quad-band GSM, EV-DO Rev. A, HSPA/UMTS, no WiFi, a weird clicky touchscreen, a wacky app store and some other bits and bobs. Give it a peek if you’re a smartphone afficianado.
  • AMD will soon start pushing its GPU-on-CPU “Fusion” technology pretty hard. To prep the market for its coming, AMD is resorting to a bizarre and arguably useless utility to “prep your computer for gaming.” Seriously, it’s just weird.

As usual, check back to this post as news rolls in throughout the day.

RIM’s terrible app store

I’m the first to admit that my fanboyish love for RIM and the Blackberry is virtually boundless. My first experience with the Curve radically and permanently altered by outlook on the mobile phone market. Since that day more than one year ago, the Blackberry Bold’s announcement has left me pining with short patience. To wit, my Twitter stream tells the tale of suffering as AT&T delays its US release time and time again. But I don’t blame you for AT&T’s failure, RIM. We could have a thing, you and I.
