Super Talent announces world’s first USB 3.0 flash drive

supertalent_usb30_driveSuper Talent announced yesterday the world’s first flash drive designed to interface with the emerging USB SuperSpeed (USB 3.0) standard.

Dubbed the RAIDDrive, the lineup will include 32GB (STU32GSSK), 64GB (STU64GSSK) and 128GB (STU128GSSK) parts. The new devices turn out speeds between 200MB/s and 320MB/s, depending on the attachment method. The product is also backwards with prior USB standards per the official 3.0 spec.

Measuring 95 x 37 x13 mm, the SuperSpeed drive is a truly portable drive. Like most USB drives, it requires no separate cable. It plugs directly into any USB port. Although this drive will work in USB 2.0, it delivers transfer speeds up to 200MB/sec only in USB 3.0 ports. Using a separate UAS Protocol driver with a USB 3.0 port this SuperSpeed drive can reach up to 320MB/sec transfer speeds.

The product is scheduled for retail availability beginning in December.

Talking with Super*Talent

On our first day of the show we met up with Bobbie Munoz who graciously showed us several products from their 2009 lineup. They were primarily demoing their commitment to enthusiast memory, flash drives and NAND-based devices this year and they’ve got some cool products.

To start with, we saw their lineup of Netbook-sized SSDs which come in 0.85 inch and 1.0 inch ZIF form factors. The drives themselves aren’t terribly fast, but given the limitations of their size this is to be expected.

This SSD module is for the smallest of small netbooks.

Gadgets’n'Gizmos Thursday

It’s Thursday, and that means, er, nothing. But we do have gadgets for you!

  • The BlackBerry Storm reviews are starting to hit the web. All sources indicate that it’s good, but not yet ready to slay the incumbent iPhone. Cue the “rains on RIM’s parade” jokes.
  • It’s rare that new developments in the flash drive arena amount to more than new capacities, new colors or some new-fangled encryption scheme. Yet Kanguru has managed to deliver the goods by releasing a flash drive with an eSATA connection for superior throughput.
  • Packard Bell is back with a netbook. Everyone grab your warranties.
  • Meet Roofus, the beastly robot that plows snow like it ain’t no thang. We, for one, accept our new robot overlords.

The hows and whys of SSDs

Solid State Disks are poised blow the doors off of traditional storage media. As the inevitable end-game of the great bet on flash memory, they are coming in strengthening numbers to obliterate benchmarks, make or break companies, and free-fall in price. The revolution this nascent market is set to unleash will leave few questions as it makes a staggering rise to preeminence.
