Mac OS X 10.5.5 update available now

With the regular slew of minor enhancements (”Improved Wiki, Blog and Podcast compatibility with Safari and iTunes on iPhone and iPod Touch.”),  major updates to components that are only important to a strict subset of users (Active Directory plugin enhancements excite the hell out of me, sorry…) and obscure “Many graphical enhancements” updates, Apple is now pushing 10.5.5 update out via Software Update.

You can read the full release notes, or download the offline installer if you don’t feel like using Software Update.

iPhone Application roundup

Everyone knows the new iPhone 3G was released last Friday, madness occurred, shortages were reported, and Apple failed.

Gizmodo

Regardless if you actually made the plunge and purchased the new iPhone, the new applications are available to everyone with v2.0.

The launch of the iPhone 3G might go down as epic fail (yes, I said it), but the iPhone applications are making people forget all about the 6 hours it took activation.

At the launch on July 11th, the App Store had 500 applications ready for download – with 25% of them being completely free. A day before the App Store was opened to the public, it made Apple $55,000.

So you may be wondering which apps are worth your attention. You may not have the time to go through the App Store and download hundreds of applications like I did. This is a good thing.

Below are some of the iPhone application reviews and recommendations that will help you decide exactly which applications are worth your precious 3G bandwidth.

Triple boot on your MacBook Pro

Introduction

Ever felt the need to run three operating systems separately on your MacBook Pro? I scoured the internet in search of a good, straightforward guide to accomplishing the task. Unhappy with what I found, I decided to write one up for anyone else daring enough to do the same.

KDE opens to Apple and Microsoft alike

I thought this neither possible nor likely, but it seems KDE has been introduced for Windows and Mac OS. The clever thing about it is that the installer contains universal binaries that will run on any platform the package is configured for. If you hop on over to Ars you can behold all the Linux’y goodness running on its evil siblings.

Apple announces $1799 MacBook Air

Today at the MacWorld 08 expo, Steve Jobs announced Apple’s new super-thin, super-light MacBook Air. Weighing in at 3lb, the Air is a mere .76″ thick at the “thick” part. Shipping standard with a 1.8″ 80gb hard drive, 2gb of RAM, and a .45nm Core2 Duo 1.6 or 1.8ghz processor, it is a fully functional computer while remaining extremely portable. 5 hours of battery life shows the improvements that have been made in CPU and energy tech in the last few years, as well.

At $1799, however, it moves into the realm of the “elite” where only the swank can afford to play. :p

Still, not gonna lie… I like… And I want.. :(

New Macs

45nm quad Xeon + Radeon HD 2600 XT + up to 32GB RAM and + up to 4TB storage = New Macs. How swanky.

How to: iPod video on a TV using normal RCA cables

Being that my stereo’s auxiliary port has a left and right channel I can plug into, I took my Apple branded RCA plug and went to put it into my stereo. To my confusion, I was only receiving one channel of sound. After I started switching around the plugs I realized Apple had made a proprietary plug for novice users and was sending the video and audio over uncommon colors on the RCA plug.

Helpful freeware apps for Mac OS

More and more people are using Macs. Little freeware applications abound for Mac OS but not many new Mac users are familiar with some of the best ones. I’ve put together a short list of some of the more helpful applications I’ve run across.
