XHTML 2 dead

The XHTML 2 working group is being suspended by the W3C at year’s end to focus resources on HTML 5. A good move, since I think even many web devs don’t understand the difference.

Read this just a few minutes ago. At first I was a little surprised, but with W3C's stated plans to continue to keep HTML compatible and implemented with XML, then nothing is lost.

  2. Not surprised myself, really. Having 2 standards is confusing, and HTML 5 is actually getting out in the consciousness of the greater-geek community for the first time, so they want to parlay that into more action and clarity. I like where their head is.

I think this makes a lot of sense, I only remember begging to learn XHTML before I stopped doing web design much but it seemed like it was overly confusing despite pushing towards all the good things that have come with so much standards development.

xhtml is not confusing. It just makes sense. And as long as html5 stresses symantic markup then I don't care what they call it.
