I have only a very high level idea of how it works, what websites to use and how long it might take (and that any of these statements may reflect nothing in reality), but I am curious on trying out D&D or a similar style game and wanted to see if there were others who would be interested in it. I know that some ICers use a set time once a week, which seems like a solid idea. I know there is a website to replace the pen and paper portion of the game, and maybe dice? I don't remember. Anyways, I'm sure the vets will have tips and we can go from there. Thanks

Hey @drasnor

We were talking tonight about the campaign you'll be running. All we know so far is:

Pathfinder
All core classes available

What I'd like to do is get some pre-game stuff ready. I'd like to plan my character out and start doing background and backstory; the others that I talked to tonight would like to do the same thing.

Unless you plan custom classes and races, I don't think we'll need to know anything about the campaign world except for Deities for divine spellcasters. If you could just let us know what races, classes, and deities will be available in your campaign, I think we can start to build our characters.

I picked up a discounted copy of the Pathfinder Advanced Players Guide and it adds six new core classes, a bunch of new spells, and even new rules (including combat rules like drag, dirty trick, steal, and reposition and Hero Points). There's one new core class that I'd be particularly interested in for my character if it's available. If you'd rather not use anything from this book, that's fine, but I'm hoping you'll take a look at the book and agree that they're well balanced and not game-breaking.

How many people are you going to allow in on the campaign? I'm definitely in if there's a spot for me.

For those who don't have the books yet:

Hey guys. I started my 4E campaign, and I opted to go the "create my own campaign from scratch" route, which is idiocy totally fun. I found a tool called Obsidian Portal that is making everything a lot more organized than I'm used to. It's got a wiki, forum, calendar, map tool, and everything to organize the stuff in-between sessions.

I figured I'd share it with you guys if you want to follow along. Also, maybe we could use this for the Firmament campaign. I like it a lot.

Here's my world so far (barebones). It's called The World of Song.

I'm providing this since some of you are getting antsy to start doing backstory and character-building decisions for the next campaign. I realize there's not a whole lot here to satisfy that aspect of your curiosity, but hopefully this will give you some world history to start framing your mindset.

Origin Story (from the point of view of humans, dwarves, elves, gnomes, etc; hereafter referred to as humankind)
It's been roughly two millennia since the the three goddesses brought the races of humankind to their promised land and found it already taken. The goddesses brought us to Firmament in the bill of a great stork flying across the ocean of stars. However, in the chaos of their arrival the goddess Zaphyra was forced to stay behind and safeguard the ancients' bounty while the goddesses Ariel and Kharla brought us across the final distance in their arms.

What greeted our ancestors on Firmament were the Dragons. There was a great, brief war between the goddesses and the dragons to decide which of us would be allowed to survive. The dragons in their might clashed with the goddesses in their fury and rent the land and skies asunder. In the end, the metallic-hued dragons made peace with the goddess Ariel to allow the dragons and our people to coexist. Kharla, furious at this betrayal, cursed Ariel on behalf of all of our dead. Likewise did the chromatic dragons curse their metallic bretheren. But this uneasy peace has held.

As their final act together, the goddesses created demigods to oversee us and locked themselves away in slumber until the advent of Zaphyra. It is written that her coming will be marked by a great flame in the heavens, and the bounty of the ancients bestowed upon the righteous. Today most remember, but few truly believe.

About the world:
Firmament is a small world roughly the size of Earth's moon, but with roughly the same mass and thus gravity as Earth. Firmament's surface is 3/4 covered in water. The remainder is land spread across three continents; two on opposite sides of the planet spreading north to south across an equator and a frozen continent over the north pole shrouded in mist.

The two temperate continents are home to all the sentient life on Firmament as well as the usual fantasy flora and fauna. There is a good deal of geographic variety on the populated continents and all the major biomes except tundra are represented. There are also a few strange regions distorted by the Dragon War where nature behaves in peculiar ways. The frozen, mist-covered continent to the north remains enigmatic as no adventurers have ever returned that set foot inland from its coasts.

I have not quite firmed up (hah) what the present technology level or political layout will consist of. The party will be starting in a small town in a mountainous region conveniently located near the border of two nations engaging in a territorial dominance war.

I toyed with changing how time works, but the game system really relies on Earth time for best results. As such, a year is 360 24-hr days, where an hour is 60 minutes and a minute is 60 seconds. There are 12 months each 30 days long, and the climate conditions are such that each year has four seasons (3 months each) outside of the arctic and tropics (which get two seasons).

The things in the sky consist of two stars, a large one and a smaller one orbiting it fairly closely, and a huge planet that Firmament itself is a moon of. Firmament orbits about this yet-to-be-named planet once every month. Rarely but predictably for those in the know, the relative positions of this planet and the suns makes for a week-long eclipse which will likely be given religious significance. Also, all the stars in one portion of the sky are deep red shading through pink to white in a wide band before shading through blue to violet on the opposite side.

Religion:
For the human races, there are the three major faiths of the goddesses. The followers of Ariel are generally advocates of secular tolerance; but are widely demonized as selling out humankind's birthright to Firmament. The majority of people are followers of Kharla, which is supremacist versus the Dragons and dragonians. The followers of Zaphyra are the fewest in number as members of her faith have no secular interest. It is a selfless faith whose followers give everything of themselves to help their fellows. Each race claims their own patron demigod as well.

Magic:
Magic is poorly understood among humankind. Arcane magic is thought to derive from the forces which shape existence. Attuning one's mind to these energies allows the sufficiently willful to bend them. Some are born innately with the knack while others can learn it through study.

Divine magic is thought to be granted by the demigods as representatives of the goddesses.

Races:
TBD, but essentially all the basic Tolkien faire is here. In addition there are the dragonians, which are nomadic lizard-people who mostly keep to themselves and don't speak common. I haven't decided if I want to make them playable or not since coping with extreme racism and inability to communicate is very hard to roleplay; though reading Darths & Droids has been inspiring.

Classes:
TBD, count on all the basics and I'll decide on the others later.

In closing, the setting is meant to be a medium fantasy epic with sci-fi elements. I'd also like to request that we play this episodically in lieu of continuously like the Isles story. Feedback welcome.

We need to retcon the crew of the Danger Bride.

As it stands now, the party took off that morning without talking to any of the crew who helped them get there. I blame this on being away from the plot for too long, and I don't want to penalize the party (or mess up the story-line) because we all (yes, me too) forgot to role-play what happened with the other crew-members.

So, I'm just going to let you guys decide who you should take with you, and we'll retcon the story to say they they were with you on the boat that morning when you left for Joy, or that you said goodbye and left them behind, or whatever you did.

FallingDove and Dam'Rei had both decided to stay in The City of Faith. The former to help her brother out at The Dragon's Flask, and the later to raise her child in the tight-nit community of the Drake Quarter. Landon Haley is, of course already with you. That leaves five potential additions to the crew:

ChippedLance (The Pyromancer) has a strong desire to join the crew. She isn't much of a deck-hand, but she can help with any missions as a combatant.

Shi'Rahk (The Priest of The Traveler) would be interested in traveling with the crew. He has nothing tying him to any particular place or job. He is fleet of foot, and well-versed in healing and protection magic. He's also an able deck-hand and navigator, but has little ability or experience in direct combat.

Jessiblather Firewind Tickleteaser Hawktemple Esq. (The scholar and merchant) doesn't know what to do now that his shop and home are gone. He thinks it'd be an interesting experience to voyage with The Danger Bride, but he could just as easily find passage to his boyhood home on Tinker in the KAR islands, where he could see his family, and maybe try to open a new shop. As a versitile scholar, he could easily grow into any position on the ship.

Bgomat (The Mongrelfolk Adept) wants nothing more than to continue adventuring alongside Fingerdiddle. She's not much of a force now, but she has an obvious natural magical aptitude which could go in any direction. She seems to have quickly taken to life at sea over the last week, and could be almost as adaptable as Jessiblather given the right training.

Yarrow Weatherford (The Hunter and Siege Engineer) had a lot of fun playing with the ballista on the way from Flai, and wouldn't mind sailing with the crew a bit longer before returning to his post in the Lynx Isles. He is the only crew member with the Siege Engineer feat.

Since the crew compliment for the Danger Bride is 8, the party should probably take on at least 2 of these folks. None of them are asking for pay (just food and a bunk), so there is no real disadvantage to taking them on. There are only ten beds on the ship, but there should never be a time when everyone is sleeping at once, anyhow.

Discuss and decide in this thread what you want to to do, and I'll retcon it into the story.

I just realized that my recent computer trouble caused me to lose all of my FG data. I had been backing it up regularly, but the drive I was backing it up onto was also lost.

I still have all of my graphics and external documents, of course, but anything that I typed directly into Fantasy Grounds (PCs, NPCs, shops, cities, and quest descriptions) is gone, and the last copy I have of it is the one I put on My laptop in June to play at Epic. That's one level back for the PCs, so re-leveling them wont really be a big deal, and I think Drew has all of his info about Melixa written out somewhere else. Some stuff, we'll just have to try to remember.

The biggest thing lost is all of the documents about The Isles of The Fallen: Tavern discussions, quests, NPCs, it's all gone, and we can't play without out it.

I got tired of my rogue in another campaign and am bringing in a two-weapon ranger/rogue instead. I figured I'd share with y'all the worksheet I made to keep track of his attacks. Print it out on something sturdy if you're going to use it.

Set-up:
1) Fill in your base weapon stats in the Weapon table.
2) Fill in your base attack bonus in the Attack Bonus table.
3) Sum your ability score mods and "other" mods to Total Attack Bonus and put them in the Attack Bonus table.
4) Add your relevant Total Attack Bonus (ranged for weapon finesse, melee otherwise,) weapon attack enhancement bonus, any other off-sheet weapon-specific bonus (e.g. weapon focus,) and the relevant two-weapon fighting penalty for each weapon and put the results in the Attack workspace in the first two MOD boxes of First Attack.
5) Subtract 5 from the Off-Hand attack mod for each successive Off-Hand attack permitted by your feats and enter it into the corresponding MOD boxes.
6) If your Base Attack Bonus is greater than 5, subtract 5 from each MOD box of the First Attack you filled in and fill in the corresponding Second Attack boxes.
7) If your Base Attack Bonus is greater than 10, subtract 5 from each MOD box of the Second Attack you filled in and fill in the corresponding Third Attack boxes.
8) If your Base Attack Bonus is greater than 15, print out another card .
9) Fill in the relevant damage bonuses for each weapon in the Damage Bonus table. This is typically your STR mod but may be more due to augment crystals and Weapon Specialization feats, etc.
10) Add each weapon's enhancement bonus to damage and relevant bonus from the Damage Bonus table and enter it in the relevant MOD boxes in the Damage workspace.
11) Put an X in each box in each workspace that your character can't use.

Usage:
1) Roll a d20 for each attack and enter the results in the white ROLL box in the Attack workspace. Re-roll any critical threats and put the result in the adjacent gray box.
2) Add the MOD for each column with your ROLL results to determine the total attack roll and enter it in the corresponding TOTAL box.
3) For each hit, roll damage and enter the results in the white ROLL box in the Damage workspace. Roll sneak attack/critical damage in the adjacent gray box.
4) Add the damage MOD for each weapon to your ROLL results to determine the total damage roll and enter it in the corresponding TOTAL box.
5) Sum up all the TOTALs.
6) Tell the DM how badly his/her creature just got owned.
7) Erase ROLLs and TOTALs from both workspaces and get ready for your next turn.

For reference, Melixa only uses the first three columns of the first two attacks, but yes, each one of those ROLL boxes on a well-trained, high-level two-weapon character corresponds to a d20 you get to roll during your turn. That's a lot of dice.

I've decided to change the way I do normal stores that the party encounters. Instead of making up a price list for every town, I'm going to give the players access to the spreadsheet that I use to make the price lists. It's set-up to be easily searchable and sortable in whatever way you need.

Then, instead of taking the time to make the actual shop list, I'll just tell the player what kind-of items are for sale for what level of prices, and they can check the list. For instance I might tell you that you've come to a shop where they sell common items for a 'normal' price, Lynxian clothing for a 'rare' price, and Draconian items for an 'abundant' price with a price limit of 3000gp. Then you can use this worksheet to see all those items and their prices.

This will not change the magic shops, those will still be specified in a list, for the most-part.

If you are not familiar with how to use a sortable spreadsheet like this one, let me know, and I'll walk you through it.

I'm just about finished working out everything for my new character. I've spoken with CB and it will be entering the game with the full allotment of gear equivalent to the DMG starting gold for its level and the gear choices I've made in that regard may seem overpowered compared to what y'all have been used to.

I highly recommend that if there's anything you want from Dal'Ruth's equipment to make your characters more combat-effective that you take it. My new character can use some of his old stuff but those additions would make it even more combat effective than I think it's going to be already.

I'm pretty pumped about my new character and look forward to Sunday when y'all get to meet it.

If you sit in IRC, then you know I was having trouble with the new combat tracker properly populating information about the battle actors.

Well, in attempt to fix that, I've downloaded another new module, this time a user-made one. Once I got it installed, I saw that not only does it fix the combat tracker, but makes a number of other improvements that we've all been talking about for a year.

Just a few:

a new window called "The Box". If you drop dice into The Box, then only the DM gets to see the result. (!!)

A new options panel which allows (among other things) users to change the behavior of the mouse wheel, so that it only modifies numbers with the ctrl button held in.

A client-side combat tracker that allows the players to see the general condition of the other combatants (injured, healthy, dying, etc.)

There are a lot of other little things, but these are the three that you guys will notice most. Drew is about to log in to level-up Dal'Ruth, so we'll give some of the new features a test run.

Since the last update to the Book of the Isles, when Brian commented that he didn't have Word, I've been thinking how neat it would be to start a wiki for the campaign, so that all the rules, and other information could be stores there, and some of it would be editable by the players.

Then, on Friday, Gabe of PA posted about this obsidianportal.com, which is a wiki designed for D&D campaigns.

I'm going to look over the tools and see if it would work for us, but I'd like to know: Is it something that you guys would even be interested in using? or would you rather I just kept distributing this one document?

Here is the current version of the setting description. It still needs some more detail and editing, but it should be finished enough to let the players make informed decisions about their characters.

You may create a background for your character, but this is not required. If you do: make sure you remember that these are Lvl1 characters. They are exceptional people, but entirely inexperienced, so any background should really only include family, home-town, and reason for adventuring. You also don't know quite where you will be starting out in the world or in the story, but you will all be starting in the same place (I wont be doing the thing that some DMs do of spending the first 10 sessions getting the PCs to meet one-another), so leave your background open for whatever position you might find yourself in at the beginning of the story.

Feel free to post questions here.
