I think it's fascinating, and maybe in some small way a glimmer of hope that some people are listening and understanding the current outcry for equality. On the old list only three female artists cracked the top fifty, now it's seven. On the old list there were eleven black artists in the top 50, and mostly ones that had gained mainstream success with a white audience. The new list has 25 in the top 50, and a few acts that are not as pop crossover successful with white kids.

I'm going to sit down and metrics the two lists to see the changes. I think for some it will be easy to dismiss as unimportant, just a corporate magazines view, but I think it's important recognition to be included on that list. It's a way of saying that art left a fairly significant mark on popular culture, and to see more musical genres represented outside the classic rock sphere, to sort of allow a newer generation to come in and say, hey, the Beatles and Stones are great and all, but there is a lot more going on now... I think it represents progress and this is coming from a middle aged classic rock kinda guy (but a huge music fan first)

https://cytu.be/r/IRimCocciNuts

IRimCocciNuts is my idea for a crowd sourced music list. All users can add music and open polls for deletion.

If you have a cytu.be account and want to participate, throw your cytu.be username in here (or shoot me a pm if you prefer) and I'll get you leveled up.

I started with a large list I've built over time. If there is enough interest in this then I'll find a better way to seed the list. I'm culling some of the original list as more people add stuff

If we notice any dups, please just point them out and we'll kill em.

Cytube only allows 1 poll at a time, boo. Discord is a good place for polls. Can run a few at a time and pin them so peeps can just look at the pins for active votes. Come join us in the #irimcoccinuts channel on Discord to vote for removals.
Make sure to uncheck "Add as temporary" when adding to the list unless you really only want your song to play once

Participants can move songs around so feel free to do so. As always, don't be dicks. Let's make something awesome.

If I remove something you like, feel free to re-add it, if it gets voted to remove, it will need to stay gone.

I will remove non-music videos without bias.

As you may know, I'm a bit of an album junkie.

I don't buy singles. I abhor shuffle mode. Spotify and its ilk are foreign to me.

When I hit play, I want a 30-90 minute experience, not your 10 latest tracks slapped together. Highs and lows, openings and closings, amazing transitions, and contrasts between sections. Give me a movement, goddamn it. Evoke emotions. Hold a thought for more than 3 minutes 15 seconds, and don't you dare fall back on that chorus one time too many. Throw me off balance; don't just give me what I expected.

I can guess how good an album is going to be from the first half-dozen spins, but it's around 10-20 spins that I figure out how good it really is. That's the exciting discovery phase, where it starts to burn into your brain a bit. From there I'll easily spin it 80-120 times (or more) if it's one of the great ones. That's the pure bliss phase: You think you know it, but you're still finding tiny details, and it hasn't become old hat.

Then there are the albums that just never wear out.

Here's my current top eleven (deal with it). They're unranked, but man the first three get serious bonus points for containing my favorite track transitions ever. I give Pink Floyd & The Who a second honorable mention each because they really are the paragons of the format.

Pretty. Odd. - Panic! At the Disco

Some Nights - Fun.

Let Live and Let Ghosts - Jukebox the Ghost

Black Holes and Revelations - Muse

Give Up - The Postal Service

Animals - Pink Floyd (honorable mention: Wish You Were Here)

Folie a Deux - Fall Out Boy

Blackstar - David Bowie

Broken Bride - Ludo

Quadrophenia - The Who (honorable mention: Tommy)

Nordo - Air Traffic Controller (my latest addition to this list of greatness)

Genre footnote: I'm sticking to the refuge of my rock/alt standard fare here. I've been getting increasingly into jazz, and while Time Out (Brubeck) and Kind of Blue (Davis) surely are among the greatest albums, I'm abstaining from venturing into that genre with Opinions™ yet. I also have a few strong soundtrack opinions as well, but I've likewise omitted those as I only dabble with them and am not a huge proponent of taking that music out of its context.

Who likes records? I do. @mertesn does. @Gargoyle‌ does. And I hear @linc does too. Let's talk.

I don't have a huge or valuable collection, but probably half my music purchases are on LP. I like the format. The physical presence encourages me to engage with the music actively. You've gotta take care when listening so you don't jack up the record, and the packaging forces you to interact with the art and liner notes, unlike a CD where some little booklet stays tucked into the notches in the lid of the case, or an MP3 where you just say screw it and play one song.

My current interest (as of yesterday) is this fundraiser selling test pressings (the record equivalent of a beta test) for charity. Seems cool.
http://www.testpressingsforcharity.org/

What about you? What's spinning on your turntable?

I was going through my music library on my laptop (different thread) and was listening to a few songs. I then hit me that a few of these songs describe my life pretty accurately, which got me to thinking, what songs describe your life? They can describe your life in general, places you feel fondly of, memories made (both good and bad) and so on. So I want to know, what songs (not just one) describe your life?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Are you hardcore death metal that listens to the occasional ABBA when you're not around your friends? Down with the homeboys at the corner listening to some fiddy cent but you also secretly listen to some Clay Aiken? :o So, what are you ashame of listening to? Come on! Some of you older folks gotta listen to some 2Pac or NWA.

I really could care less about others and play pretty much anything but I listen to some old Salsa when it's pretty unusual for young people to listen to. Some oldies my dad got me used to when I was a little kid (Temptations, Four Seasons, etc.), some Disco (ahhhhhh Freak Out!) and the occasional old latin ballad (Pablo Milanes - Yolanda is pretty awesome).
