In a moment of weakness...

...I must have clicked a link in IE, when I should have been using Firefox...not sure, might have been some page with a video on it that wouldn't play in FF, but anyway, now Windows Update won't install the Malicious Software Removal tool update, and Spybot S&D locks up during its scan.

Here's my HJT log:

    Can someone help me out?

    Sorry for the delay!

I don't see too much wrong in your log, but lets do some checking.

    Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://localhost:9100/proxy.pac

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    Click Fix Checked

    =====

    Please run this scan:

    Panda ActiveScan

    - Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

Thanks very much for your reply! Done, and here's the HiJackThis log...

I noticed that HJT would not delete the item you told me to fix.

You need to disable Windows Defender. To do that, do the following:

    Windows Defender
    1) Open Windows Defender.
    2) Click on Tools > General Settings.
    3) Scroll Down and Uncheck Turn on real-time Protection (recommended).
    4) After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
    5) Right click on the Windows Defender icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Windows Defender.

Now try removing that R1 entry with HJT.

    =====

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location; your desktop would be a better place.

    Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
    Under Main choose:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

    *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

    Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu

    =====

Reboot and post a new HJT log. Let me know how things are now. :)
