Browser slow to load, or not at all

First of all, thanks for any help in advance!
I am running an emachine T3265 Athalon with XP connected to the internet via a cable connection. I have a Vonage phoneline. This problem started about a month or so ago. My home page will not load upon starting the internet. If I immediately try to refresh it, sometimes it will load. Sometimes, it won't. This is not just a problem with my home page. Any site that I try to load will either lock up, or take forever to load. This is particularly annoying since I have the cable connection, and if it is not working, what is the point in paying the higher price?

OK that's better. I like to take things one step at a time so I hope you don't mind. That way we don't miss anything. You might want to print these instructions as you will not have access to the internet for part of this fix. Follow the steps below:

Download LSPFix from here.

• Unzip LSPFix to your desktop.
• Disconnect from the internet (physically pull the cable) and run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
• Check the I know what I'm doing box.
• In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of rlls.dll.
• Select every instance of rlls.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
• When you are done click Finish>>.

Do NOT move any other files to the remove box, only rlls.dll.

Once this is complete please reboot the PC, reconnect your cable modem and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Good job. That little nasty is gone.

Unless you use the SemanticInsight Toolbar I suggested removing it. Go to Start--->Control Panel--->Add/remove programs. When the list appears find RXtoolbar and uninstall it.

If you can't find it in the list then reboot the PC in safe mode. Do this by rebooting the PC and then repeatedly tap the F8 key until the advanced boot options menu appears. Select the top choice which is "safe mode" and press enter. Once in safe mode make sure you can view all hidden files, explained below:

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders: (Windows XP).

• Click "Start".
• Click "My Computer".
• Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
• Select the "View" tab.
• Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
• Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click "Yes" to confirm.
• Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types".
• Click Apply then click "OK".

Next use Windows Explorer to delete the following:

C:\Program Files\RXToolBar<----This folder.

Reboot the PC into normal mode and post a fresh log. After this we'll download a scanner, do a clean up, and then we should be done.

After I ran HJT, I ran a search, and found the file in the Spybot S&D recovery file in the Common Name zip file. I don't know what that means, but there it is.

Is your Ewido Anti-Malware installation up to date? If it is I suggest you do a full scan using Ewido in safe mode, explained below:

• Be sure to update Ewido.
• Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. Then, run ewido.
  
• Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  
• Click on scanner
• Click on Settings
  • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
  • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
  • Click OK
• Click on Complete system scan
• Let the program scan the machine
  
• If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Please check the box that says Perform Action with all Infections.
  
• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop
• Exit ewido

Post back with the Ewido log and a fresh Hijack This log.

Everything seems to be working better. However, I have a question. I seem to have over 50 processes running at any given time. How do I find out what I need to have running and what I can get rid of? Is there a program that would do that, or do I need to start another thread and just tell you the processes that are running?

There are some things in your log we should try to fix with Hijack This but first you can use Hijack This to post all your running processes here. Open Hijack This and click on the open the misc tools button. Next click the Open process manager button.

In the upper right hand corner of the process manager screen is a clipboard. If you press the clipboard a window will open that says the process list has been copied to your clipboard. Open the Notepad program and press and hold the ctrl key then press the V key. The processes will be pasted into Notepad. Save that file with a name like processes.txt. On your next reply post the entire contents of that file here. After I take a look at that we'll work on finishing cleaning up your log.

HI ptlovett! Sorry it took a little while to get back with you. Below I've listed the numbers of the processes from above that don't necessarily need to run all the time:

Some of these were programs that were running at the time of the scan but most don't need to run all the time. However with that said if they're not running some of the associated programs might give you problems. The idea here would be to experiment and disable a few to see what happens. This would be a custom configuration very similar to what I run. If you need instructions on how to disable a startup item just let me know.
