Nudity in Sig Images

Ok, I am not a prude, I have seen my share of nudity on the web, and not by accident. And I have taken a stroll through the resident Babe Thread. But as a father who uses the computer in a den with an open door, and an employee who uses a computer in an open office, I am cautious about what pages I open when.

But some users on Short Media have chosen to use pictures of naked women in their signatures. Sure, a well placed piece of text covers the couple of pixels that turns the image from R rated to an X-rated one. But there is more than enough there to catch the eye of a 12 yr old son, or to raise the ire of his mother, should either of them be walking by or come in to talk to me when I am visiting my favourite tech site. Nor should my boss think I am looking at porn on company time when I am keeping up to date on technical issues.

If people want to see semi-naked women, they should feel free to go to the Babe Thread. But I don't think that every single thread that certain people have posted on should be R-rated just because that poster wants a naked woman in his sig.

I suggest that all sig images be clean. Safe for work and safe for families. I am not asking anyone to ban the babe thread. I am not trying to pick on the people who think they need to have a pic of a naked woman in their sigs to attract attention to it. Just please clean up your sigs for those of us who have jobs and families. And maybe get over your silly dancing/jiggling avatars too.

    I agree, Dexter.

I know when people are around and I'm looking @ S-M I'm careful to minimize the window or scroll up/down because I don't want them to think I'm a pervert. :D

I know what you mean! I was thinking of this just 2 days ago after I was making a quick reply and one of those sigs was right above the reply box when my wife came up behind me and asked what I was doing.:eek2: I just about jumped out of my skin and she asked if I was replying to some kind of porn chat or something. :(

I have the same problem at work, when reading, I have to make sure that the images in question are offscreen, and scroll past them very fast, not critical, but annoying :(

I agree... I do A LOT of browsing here at SM and it's during work hours. I do not want anyone jumping the gun and accusing me of any wrong doing. I do enjoy an occasional "nice looking", barely clothed (or none) picture.... but I'd rather not have to explain the images in the sigs to my boss of wife. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the sigs. The pictures are great but not as sigs.

I personally have no objections, but my girlfriend did think I was looking at porn the other day when she glanced at the screen with a certain persons sig on display.;)

The main problem I have, is that it distracts me when I'm reading threads. I can't take my eyes of it.;D

While we try and be as lenient as possible, sigs with 'risque' images are going to have to be removed :(

Those have them know who they are ;) we can trust you to 'cover' them up :)

I agree as well. No one ever wants to see the boss walk by and then ask you what you're doing.

I guess the best way for at work or if its too bad would be to disable them.

    user cp>Edit Options>Thread View Options>Show user's signatures in their posts? = no

Disabling sigs is only a half-fix though, because I like to see people's folding sigs.

I concur... There are many sigs that are really cool and I would like to see them. This is a touchy subject since people want to express themselves and others may find it offensive or inappropriate. I haven't said anything before so I must not have a great concern, but it is a concern that I am interested in resolving.

I fully agree on this subject. We have a "Babe Thread" for a reason. When I;m reading about a new Mother Board or Video Card, or Chipset I'd rather not be looking at a half naked digital female.

I just found myself scrolling past pics today in school. Usually I dont even think about it cause I am at home but I had read this thread and thought about it when I saw some pics.

Last year my teacher saw it once and commented a lil. He didnt really say anything. He knew it wasnt my fault.

I agree too with the no nudity in sigs but it pisses me off that we can't have full (tasteful/arty) nudity in the babe thread. No porn, just class thats what I desire. :)

    Regards

Okok... I get the hint.... sheesh...

It's no problem at all. I was starting to think about a different sig for some of the same reasons you guys have mentioned.

I found it kinda funny tho... people tiptoeing around my name when we all knew who's sig this thread was refferring to. ;D

Wow!!! Your posts look so bleak now. Kind of like the "Twilight Zone" or something without any color. That was a rather drastic change.

I'll get some different images later, and change the table I had used to suit them.

BTW, I never meant to cause anyone trouble, just trying to be a bit different.

Well, since I started the thread, I will reply to your posts:

a - no offence taken. Like I said, I am a big boy who appreciates the nude female form at the appropriate time and place. :D But, as detailed, I didn't want to have to stop checking here until late at night after the wife and kids have gone to bed ;)

b - I wasn't trying to tip-toe around your name, I didn't know how many members had risque images in their sigs, yours was one of the ones that came to mind, as my 12 yr old was nearby me in the den while I was repsoonding to a post of yours. I just didn't know how many others there were, if this was a common thing on the old Icrontic, etc, so I thought it best to make my thoughts known generically.

c - I appreciate you being understanding enough to moderate your sig for those of us it may place in uncomfortable positions at work or at home.

TheSMJ, I loved the sigs, but it sure makes surfing SM difficult @ work & @ college, as you've got the admins watching your every move (sometimes in person). :)

Ok, so no risqué sig images... I can live with that (or I'll try to anyhow :D) but what about stuff that's not so risqué, e.g. this (scroll down)

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: My eyes are *STILL* dilated from going to the ophthalmologist today so I'm wearing those black shades they give you AND my prescription sunglasses so that I can tolerate not being in a completely dark room but even with all that I had to take half the tint off my eyeballs (and risk going blind, ;D ) to get a look at her. :D
