Would like to know if anyone can help me,i have reinstalled win98 but i can't get any sound.I have two chips in my laptop..

ESS 1918
ESS 1968

i have tried installing the es1968 audio drivers from my laptop makers website but it locks up every time,i have even tried drivers from ESS but it still locks,i think over the past two months i have tried nearly every es1968 driver i can find.
as i have been looking on the internet i have been trying to find out what the es1918 chip is for,i read that it is a audio codec which works with the es1968 chip but don't know if it is right, as yet can not find drivers for es1918.
The sound worked perfect before i reinstalled win98.
Hope someone has advice for me

Whats the make and model of your laptop? This will help people find the correct driver for your machine.

Does it lock up during the driver installation, or after it's already installed?

it allways locks up when the driver is installed, just as the finish box comes up

It may not work, but try this:

Boot up in Safe Mode (hit F8 before Windows starts to load to get there)

Open Device Manager and uninstall anything you find under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers which refers to ESS

While still in Safe Mode, try reinstalling the driver again.

If this doesn't work, I have another trick up my sleeve. ;)

    During the initial installation?

    Or after rebooting?

One thing you might check: I have seen some installations where there is a dialogue box on the screen, but it is under another box. You can sit there all day, but until you click something on the hidden box it won't finish the installation - giving the appearance of being hung up.

Also, are you sure that everything regarding sound is enabled in the BIOS?

While searching for solutions I see that you've been at this for a while. I know that it must be very frustrating. Good luck. :)
