Computer Not starting up

I was on my computer and trying to open firefox, it wouldn't open and everything stopped working soon after trying to open it. I rebooted my pc and it went to a screen that said something along the lines of: "windows not booting properly and gave me a list of options that could of caused it and what i should do". I tried to start in safe mode and in last-known good cofiguration but nothing working, it just goes right back to the same screen. I've tried booting from winxp cd and that did not work. When i quit that a message came up that said that windows was not installed on my pc...does that mean i've lost everything and need to reformat?

Any suggestions appreciated.
