If we are talking about hardware firewalls now, I use my DLINK DI-624 with the july firmware revision, port 113 stealthed, and of course, the most strict rule set.

McAfee, The one that comes with MSN Premium, I wouldnt recomend it because before i wasnt able to access the network folder on this comp from another comp on my network, took me 2 months to figure out that i wasnt doing anything stupid and that it was the firewall that was blocking anyone else to view any folder that are on my PC. Also if i want to host a server on HALO, i have to disable it (took me 2 months to figure that one out to). I guess that is good for a firewall to do, but i think its to much.
After Sygate's death (which makes me really sad, stupid Symantec) I found Outpost Firewall Pro to have a good set of features. 30-day trial, I might buy it yet... http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/index.php
(I know it's a month-old thread, thought it should be mentioned in here though)
Yes, if you're behind a router or on Dial-up, don't bother with one :P
;D That's what I thought, on dial-up I wasn't to worried, but I got cable about a week ago and another router is on order. (mine died) that's why I was asking.

EDIT: That thing is a fricking memory hog
