Name your Killer Apps

I frequently hear "lack of favorite app" as a reason for not using one operating system over another. In this spirit, I'd like to show that great alternatives exist on any platform and encourage all you alternative OS users (even you Mac users) to weigh in with your favorite killer apps.

My picks:
OS: Gentoo Linux (x86, AMD64, and PPC)
Desktop Environment: gnome-metacity
Web Browsing: mozilla-firefox
E-Mail Client: mozilla-thunderbird
Instant Messaging: gaim
IRC: Xchat
Office: OpenOffice.org 2.0
Audio Player: XMMS
Movie Player: mPlayer
DVD Player: totem
CD/DVD Burning: X-CD-Roast
Photo Editing: the gimp
Peer to Peer: BitTorrent: gnome-bittorrent, DirectConnect: dc-qt
Integrated Development Environment: Anjuta
Engineering: Matlab, Maple, Mathematica.
Games: Unreal Tournament 2004, X-Plane 8, FlightGear, Armagetron Advanced

The best part is, anything listed with a link here is Free Software, as in, it costs no money.

Integrated Development Environment is software you use to make other software. On Windows you would likely use Microsoft Visual Studio or Borland.

An excellent point Armo, the idea here is maybe more people will use these OS's if they can do things with them.

    Great Idea. LOL :cool2:
    OS: Slackware
WM: XFCE or Dropline Gnome. Enlightenment kicks ass too.
    CD/DVD Burning: GnomeBaker or K3B
    Emulator: WINE, ZSNES, Mupen64
Tools: WineTools <-GUI to config wine/Install Win apps.
Development: Eclipse <-Java or Kdevelop <-Supports many lang's
Online Gaming: Kaid, gkaiui <-Xbox System Link Service

    Net Sniffer: Ethereal
    WarDriving: Kismet
    SMB: Samba
    SSH Server: OpenSSH
    VNC: TightVNC

Edit: You'll find must of this software with a quick google search. I'm too lazy. LOL Or some linux distros includes advance package managers. Ex. Debian = apt-get, Slackware = Swaret, Gentoo = emerge. So installing apps under linux is made easiler with apps like that. Ex: To install firefox under debian: as root type: apt-get --install firefox

dvd::rip works well for transcoding DVD video to ogm or avi. Had some video we took at work that had to be in a lightweight computer-readable format and it's working well for us.

To anyone using WINE-Tools; don't. It just screws up WINE these days as it's old and unmaintained. Just to solve some confusion, lots of people seem to be using a version of WINE something like wine-20050305, that is OLD, the new versioning system is x.x.x and the latest version (about a week old) is version 0.9.16.
