Ive been with Icrontic when we had our very first layout. I use to come here every day to read interesting news, read fourm topics etc. All there is now is a dead site... Someone posting one thing and thats all. We need some kick which is not here and its killing the site... :( I dont want to leave Icrontic because of all the memories but it might happen

What do you suggest bud? I think the owners are open for suggestions. I have two articles I am about to finish but would love to hear what USERS want from here,

I need deeper articles than are here, myself. I have literally been working with computers since the late 80's and have been building actively for sale since 1990. I stretched my own systems before that, and have not kept pictures of how for the most part. I simply do not fit right here, I talk about how things interact as much as how details work or more. I need that kind of peer in at least one area to be able to really appreciate this site and forum. I can express how systems work and at this stage can say this or that is not likely more than I can say immedate yeah or nay to fine details beacuse my work is more what works with what in system configs than otherwise and I troubleshoot whole system issues and flakes hands on with varying mtehods and rarely get enough info on a forums to more than specify troubleshooting procedures to start and I will come to those ideas on the fly and semi-intuitively as more a generalist than a specialist and like to teach some. Problem is, this leads to me feeling things out because I am more a situation fixer than a purer hardware, software, or people person.

One area I could work on that would be valuable possibly is system security for end users and how to implement with minimalized system impact. Ifowners and admins want I can provide some gradual FAQs and how-to in that area very well for multiple operating systems with emphasis on Windows and Linux. I know viruses after killing my first PS\1 box virus on an Atari emulating an 8-bit PC that had 300 instances on it and had corrupted teh antivurs on the emulator-- I and my co-sysop killed them with a floppy boot onto his emulation and wiped half the files that were waiting to be uploaded to my BBS and then proceeded to pull my PC downloads area fro three weeks even though my Atari ST was not affected. This was the days when a hybrid of two if the 400 major known viruses by McAfee sprouted up and no McAfee final release had known it a week before. I supplied the users that warned me with the then free trials that they used then as teens. I went on from there and deal with the PC environment from there and know that well. I consult and specify prebuilts more than I build and play with any one subclass area. Maybe I am a no-fit.

This is not criticism, but admins did not seem to understand what I was even getting at with my first four drafts of an article on power so Igot so many revisions that made the article false in parts with editing ideas that I scrapped the idea here and stuck it up on a plain text non-forum site instead. It was lack of vocabulary details at the level I write at and being over their heads as it was out of specialty for them AFAIK.

    Hey Tex,

What really got me into Icrontic were those articles and movies. Those ones with bashing computers and burning video cards. I know that it might seem bad but this can be a great site again. Also see if you can get some newsposters in here... that would really help. Some articles would be nice as well. Basically, something that we can all come to and read about. On the old icrontic, when ever I was bored I use to surf the fourms for hours, jus reading interesting topics and there results. I know that it is not possible right now but It will be. :)

Something that I liked about the site was the updates of news (including bios updates, drivers, general tidbits of tech info). I didn't mind the OT stuff but that wasn't what I specifically was looking for when I came to Icrontic.

I believe the news was what brought a lot of users to icrontic, the ghettho articles was what got me in myself. I think Icrontic needs to update more with articles on various computer aspects, like hardware, security, networking, etc.. somehow tie it all in to one nice database of info. Also some newsposters is a must to get the ball rolling and to get the members to stick around.

While we're all on the honesty trip, I don't even read most articles... very little matters to me unless I'm on the market to buy something or need help with something I just bought...

I come around to learn through other's mistakes, expenditures, and quirky issues... I usually don't care if AMD just released the new 5500+ because it's WAAAY out of my price range. When it falls enough in price to even tempt me it's very old news at that point. My opinion is that news is free marketing for the manufacturers. FAQs and tutorials, on the other hand, can be truly useful. :) Now our problem is getting knowledgeable members to write these tutorials. I'm not a know-it-all, and never claimed to be. I can;t write motherboard volt modding guides, I've never had to do it... in addition, each motherboard will require its own guide. Not a small task, but highly useful.

These forums live and die by its membership. Admins/mods/staff just keep the seats warm ;). We need more from the 'common member', instead of people waiting for the few of us to generate all the content.

Ageek, I appreciate your attempt, sorry again that it got botched. You're the type of member that shares their knowledge. You may have surpassed most forum's usefullness to your pursuits for knowledge. Unless you're in the mood to be papa-bear, this may not be a feasable avenue for you. Lord knows I've outgrown many hobbies/interests over the years, or have 'graduated' in certain respects... so I can relate to the frustration of realizing you're at the top of your game and there's really noplace else to go.

Its just going to take time... :grin

I think that the suddeness of the loss of the old site and the rebirth of the old site into 2 sites really, has been a major hit to both locations.

There are good people here and with Tex and others that are excellent touble shooters the word will get out and people will start to stray in.

Just keep it book marked and checking in and before you know it it will be like a husseling and bussleing city...

Have to mention too... that I think overall tech sites such as this are down cause the whole computer industry is down.

The majors like Dell have made building your own computer more expensive so right now I think that the over all numbers are down for newbes building their own rigs are down, thus less tech questions and less people...

Maybe Opertron and 64bit computing will jump start things...

I know that eventhough I have dual xeons the thought of an operton and running a 64bit OS and getting in on the ground floor is kind of inteagueing....

    Keep checking in... I do.

    Cheers,
    "g"

    PS. Hi ya Tex... :)

Not to beat a dead horse but we need News! Not just the everyday this guys sues that guy stuff but the silly science news also. like that article about Japanese invisible clothing.

That may be a bad example but news that makes you ponder if it could be true. Kinda like in four years this might happen.

There just used to be a good Mix of this is whats happening today in hardware, what is comeing tommorrow, and if we are really lucky this might come in 4 years and blow every thing out the water.

The air is good down here, eh?

Been there, done that. Don't have the time/desire anymore. Less headache when you're not an admin/mod.

As one of Icrontic's primary news posters it is nice to see some feedback about the news (BTW, if you have anymore feedback about the news, check out <A HREF="http://www.icronticforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2167&quot; target=_blank>this thread</A>.)

Is the news really that slow? If you are refering to the slow down in the past couple of weeks, that is the result of me not being around (check out <A HREF="http://www.icronticforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2028&quot; target=_blank>this thread</A>.)

One thing I have seen mentioned is off topic news posts. That is not something you are going to see from me. I don't believe that stories about a guy pulling a plane with his junk should be on the front page of a tech site. Yes, it is interesting and entertaining, but it is not realevent.

If you have anymore comments about the news than feel free to voice them in <A HREF="http://www.icronticforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2167&quot; target=_blank>this thread</A>, or PM me. Also, if you have a story that you think should be on the front page, then send me a PM and I will get it on the front page (assuming it is news worth, of course ;).)

There are plenty of tech sites out there that delivers just plain o tech news. With better looking websites/forums etc.. The old icrontic stood out from them becouse they went further in creating a tech comunity that wasnt just dry tech news.

I comeback here becouse it was here that I learned how to build my first pc and every now and then there is an interesting post to read. But it's not daily like I used to more like when i have a day off or bored.
