I'm having trouble downloading files due to "hips email attachment helper"

I think this is malware but I am not sure.

Google provides no information.

And no, I cannot post a HJT log because I cannot download HJT.

Anyone know what hips email attachment helper is?

The hips email attachment helper appears to be a part of the CA Personal Firewall. When I disabled the firewall, I was able to download ATF Cleaner, AdAware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster. I updated and ran each of the above.

The is my mother's computer, and her complaint is frequent crashes and slow browsing. I have noticed neither tonight, although I did have problems loading gmail and other web pages.

    Here is my HJT log

    Hi vanagon40,

Not much in the log, just some loose ends to tie up...

    1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u1.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
    2. Open HijackThis
    - Click the Do a system scan only button
    - Check the following entries (below)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

    - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
    - Click Fix Checked
    Close HiajckThis

    3. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases

        [*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan:
          Select
        My Computer
[*]This will program will start and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
        • Now click on the Save as Text button:
[*]Save the file to your desktop.

        4. Please post the Kaspersky report, along with a new HijackThis log.

        Trogan,

        Thank you for your help.

I updated JAVA as you suggested. I also removed the two HJT entries. I did not do a Kaspersky scan as I (we) have isolated the problem.

Again, this is my mother’s computer. She just switched to Insight combined cable/phone/internet service. Insight recommended CA Security system, which Mom installed. Everything is running great and web pages are loading super fast, with one exception. Gmail stalls.

We (my 71 year old mother actually solved this on her own) discovered that the CA firewall conflicts with gmail If we turn off the CA firewall, gmail loads just fine. We attempted to contact CA support earlier this evening (9:00 to 10:00 p.m. EDT) and were on hold for an hour when we gave up.

Mom is going to try CA support again in the morning. I tried with no success to determine how to add gmail as a trusted site. I really hate that my computer skills are lacking, as I used to consider myself very computer savvy. In fact, for a short period of time I was a trouble shooter on the Short-Media virus forum. Damn, I hate getting old.

At any rate, I consider that any virus/spyware problem has been solved and you can close this thread. If you have any suggestions with regard to the CA firewall-gmail conflict, I would welcome the advice. Otherwise please direct me to the appropriate forum and I will start a new thread. If CA support is able to solve the problem, I will post the solution in the appropriate thread.

        Again, thanks for your assistance.

        Stay young,

        Vanagon40

        Hi Vanagon40,

Hmm, that is strange. I don't have an answer as to why Gmail is blocked when CA's Firewall is active. I hope that CA support can solve the problem. In the mean time, I would use their SupportConnect page. You could ask in the Software forum with regards to this issue.

I will leave this thread open. I would like to know the solution to this too.
In fact, for a short period of time I was a trouble shooter on the Short-Media virus forum.
        I do remember! :)

        Hi,

Try these steps and let me know if this allows you to access the gmail:

        -> Open CA personal firewall
-> Click on Privacy -> Click on Manage sites -> Click on Add
-> type in the name of the website that you are unable to access -> OK -> Close all the windows
-> Also reset the Internet Explorer to default web settings
-> now try to access the website with the CA Firewall enabled

This should fix the problem. if it doesn't lemme know and i will give you furhter steps to try out.

        -K-

As I said before, this was on my mother's computer. She was able to get through to customer support at CA. Someone there made adjustments to the computer via remote access. Mom says everything works great now.

Neither she not I know what they did (I was not there).

        Thanks for all the assistance.
