Ok....I am sick of the issues I have been having w/ this Plextor....

Soooo....Anyone got a suggestion for a compatible drive for my setup? I am not looking for anything special...all i do is take a lot of pics of my kid and back them up to disk....Cheaper the better...but i want quality...I thought this plextor was that...but havent had anything but trouble out of it....

Your suggestions?

Anything from pioneer is pretty good these days.

I have a plextor 810sa its the same drive as the pioneer DVR-212D but costs twice as much.

Its a good drive, fast and fairly quiet.

Pioneer, Samsung, NEC. Those are the big winners, and all better than Plex these days.

Am I the only fan of LiteOn here? I can't recall ever having issues with one in the past.

LiteOn is fine and good, but their DVD burners aren't of the same caliber that their CD burners were. They're generally slower than the ones I listed above, and since everything is around the same price... :)

The SH-S202 is internal. I just have a USB IDE kit since my ultra huge case has to lay on it's side, making the doors inaccessible.

sorry for the lack of response....for some reason i got no notification that anyone had replied....

Thx YAD...been looking at that burner...you know the model for a beige if they make it?

I don't think they make that one in beige. Regardless of the color, it's one hell of a burner. It even clashes with my color scheme for now. I'm planning the third most epic case in the world.

Alright YAD you win again...I went w/ the S202...$30 shipped...

Surprised you recommended a IDE though....thought for sure you would go SATA

Sata's great for hard drives. IDE is best for Optical right now, since the only mainstream OS out there that supports AHCI natively is Vista. Saves time in the long run, and is still totally reliable.

Anybody who has installed their chipset drivers on XP has AHCI drivers. However, SATA is not dependent on AHCI. Most older SATA controllers operate in legacy IDE mode, meaning that it doesn't matter what OS you're running, as long as the BIOS can see the drive. So, realistically, SATA is still the better option.

Got the drive in and you didnt stear me wrong...it rocks....but one question...

Is Samsung the same as Sony?

I noticed that there is a label over a label...its a Sony label w/ DRU-840A under it....couldnt get anymore off it w/o tearing up the Samsung label and didnt know if the drive worked yet so didnt want to go messing too much...

Samsung, NEC, and 1-2 other companies make ROMs for everyone.

so whats the deal w/ this drive you think...mislabeled..and then relabeled...it registered in windows as the right drive...but was quite a shady label job on the drive itself...lol
