Want to build $400 PC

Keyboard, Mouse, or Monitor

The Case and everything in it.

I'm building it for another friend and I can't talk to him at the moment because I'm supposed to be in bed lights out at academy is 10:30 in WA. I'm not positive he needs everything there so throw your suggestions out there.
I'll ask him tomorrow what he needs and post an update.

Start with our Marketplace. You're gonna have a really hard time hitting that $400 mark if you need to get the monitor too.. He needs to be honest with himself at that point. Best bet is to find a free CRT that someone wants to throw away or something.

That's gonna be tough, depending on usage. What OS? There is the Asus EE PC option, just get a throwaway CRT like prime said. I'll respond pending update.

Yeah, for $400, he pretty much won't be able to build it himself, and needs to find some other way of coming up with a monitor. Scour craigslist for throwaways.

    Suggestion: Spend $100 more

Aside from that, how big of a hard drive does he want?

How about an 80 GB for $24? Open box, but it's newegg, so if you have problems they'll return it for sure.

He wants AMD, with windows xp. no graphics card.
He doesnt really care on the case but he doesnt want yellow or orange on it.
It would be nice to get a case that has a fan at the top that pushes air out the top of the case like the antec 900 but cheaper.
  • edited September 2008
Also, I would like suggestions on the motherboard cause some people say the board I picked is relatively unstable.

get the Antec 300 case for $60 Antec 300-$15

upgrade the hard drive to 160GB for $4 more 160GB HDD+$4 OR a 320GB hard drive for $12 more since I saved ya $15 on the case 320GB HDD+$12

the PSU kinda makes me cringe a little, to stay near budget I'd go PC Power & Cooling 500w

Why the step backwards with the board? Doesn't make sense to me.

There were a bunch of reviews on the gigabyte board saying that it was very unstable. So I changed to a different board.
The parts arent ordered yet things can be changed still.

Switch boards to something like this:
Open Box: BIOSTAR TFORCE TA780G http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138105R

The Biostar board has a good reputation, and the AMD 780G chipset is better than the GeForce 8100 you had selected in the previous case. It'd be perfect for your buddy.
