    Lets see:
    • Samsung-Made S-AMOLED(2) Screen
    • Tegra2+ at 1.2GHz+
    • 2500mAh battery
    • Android 2.2+ (AOSP, no Sense, not TouchWiz, no MOTOBlur. Let me choose my own (LPP) interface)
    • 4-4.3" display
    • Aluminum or Carbon Fiber unibody construction

I only want the Samsung screen. Just about any other handset manufacturer will do (Kyocera, LOL). Personally, I like getting updates and having post-sale support.

People make more about the pentile matrix than is necessary. After 5 months, I don't notice the effect much at all, and even when I do it's only in extreme circumstances with high-contrast small type. Samsung still makes the best phone display on the market, hands-down. Keep your IPS and SLCD panels and give me a display I can't use at 100% brightness because I start getting halo effects.

My ideal phone is a portable computer that also makes calls. I would want it to be able to be able to serve as the brains in a variety of embedded computing scenarios, stuff where I write the software for the phone's OS and connect it to an external chunk of custom hardware to complete the application. I also want to be able to use it for augmented reality applications.

    To those ends:
    • Texas Instruments OMAP5
    • 5" stylus+finger touch display, qHD resolution or so.
    • dual band 802.11abgn master mode-capable WLAN + Bluetooth + WUSB
    • USB 3.0 OTG
    • Fully-implemented HDMI 1.4 Type D
    • A decent GPS (Skytraq)
    • Full AHRS sensing
    • Android 2.3+ pre-rooted
    • Micro SDXC card slot
    • SIM card slot
    • 900/1700/1900/2100 radios
    • Swype touch keyboard
    • 5-row staggered-key QWERTY slide-out keyboard with D-Pad and Home pad. Keys should be domed and have good tactile response, like the keys on my MT3GS.
    • Optical trackball
    • LED flash camera with a decent lens and sensor.
    • Rubberized composite construction, maybe fiberglass or glass-filled nylon. It can't be metal or carbon fiber without screwing up antenna performance.

Today's smartphone SoCs are already APUs. Tegra 2 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon series combine a GPU, CPU and various DSPs on a single chip. Hardware-accelerated UI must come from software, as the hardware support is already there.

    I know, I know. It was just a dig, that's all. :)

If NVidia can do it now, I imagine that AMD should be able to do it cheaper/faster/more efficient in the future. At least, that's been my experience with the GPU side of the equation for the past, oh, well, since the 3870 hit the market.

    Anyway, that's off topic..

Ultimately, I don't know that the internals will make any real difference to me. Getting a solid ordinary web browsing experience down pat will require, IMO, too much CPU/GPU to make it a replacement for a reasonable mini computer, but the screen is too small to make for a great browsing experience.

So maybe my ideal smartphone would just make phone calls, manage contacts really really well, and last for more than a week. The other stuff is just fluff.

Edit: Also, sorry for "resurrecting" this thread from the grave...

I'm not too good on specs, etc, but for me the ideal phone would have a quite big (slightly bigger than the HD2) screen, bright enough to be used in sunlight. Aluminium chassis, preferably somewhat water, dust and shock/scratch resistant, 1GhZ+ processor, at least 32 GB memory, with the possibility to add memory card. NOT Windows OS, guess that leaves Android as OS, although I'm not familiar with it. At least 3G, maybe 4G, even if Norway don't have many 4G connection points yet. I don't need WiFi or Bluetooth. Must be able to be used close to worldwide. I don't need a camera, but a built in flashlight would be nice. I also find GPS to be a great tool.

Also, I want Norway Tele companies to pull out their finger and get a decent subscription service for phones that are not made by Apple.

So, the HTC Sensation 4G ("HTC Pyramid") was announced today for Europe (May) and North America (likely June).

As I've told many people along the way, I wouldn't dump my BlackBerry until the time was right, and there was a phone that matched my wishlist. I posted that wishlist in my OP, which I've repeated below with the Sensation's specs to match.
    • 4.3" SLCD screen (Sensation: 4.3" SLCD)
    • qHD resolution (Sensation: Yes, 960x540)
    • Dual core 1GHz+ CPU (Sensation: 1.2GHz dual core Qualcomm MSM8260)
    • Android 2.2+ (Sensation: Android 2.3.3)
    • HTC Sense UI (Sensation: Yes, Sense 3.0)
    • Aluminum unibody (Sensation: Yes)
    • No keyboard (Sensation: Yes)
    • HDMI output (Sensation: No)
    • 1700MHz AWS radio (T-Mobile US/Mobilicity CAN) (Sensation: Yes)

    Dudes, I'm goin' Android.

HTC Watch uses progressive download technology that makes it possible to watch videos without waiting for a huge file to finish downloading.

    Buffering?

I'm also ready to ditch my 9700 for some htc android action. Waiting for September to get out of my at&t contract and see what's doing in the us market at that time. Sensation looks great!

Sounds like glorified buffering with a pinch of streaming. Probably won't work in Canada, so I'll likely have to remove it once the phone is rooted (if the bootloader isn't locked, that is).

Sure, but you're in Canada now, so you'll only be able to download 250MB/month.

    You're thinking of Usage-Based Billing (UBB): http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=776859

It was overturned by the Minister of Industry. He sent the CRTC (think FCC) back to review their decision, and told them that anything remotely resembling UBB would also be overturned. Most ISPs have reverted to their pre-UBB bandwidth caps, which means unlimited consumption for several ISPs in the major cities.

Bootloader's supposedly locked up tight, in keeping with HTC's recent handsets, but it'll be rooted before too long.

Launch day Sensation, here I come.

I can't wait for the Sensation. My rooted G1 is fun and all, but the Sensation is going to devour it whole.

I'm curious to what kind of external speaker action this phone has going on. The marketing blabber says "full hi-fi audio", but the promo video (and side photographs) show a sizeable hole on the side where, presumably, a decent speaker is placed. With the focus on the media, having good sound makes sense, and I would love to have a phone with rockin' audio output.

A locked bootloader is a serious concern of mine. Being unable to update to future firmware when HTC decides to move on just may be a dealbreaker, no matter how much I actually want this device.

May want to pay attention to @paulobrien, then. He spoke with some HTC reps who confirmed the bootloader outlook hasn't changed, and will likely be one of the most up-to-date people on the rooting and tinkering scene when it comes out.

I bought the G2 and I've used the physical keyboard right around 8 times, I think all for typing in my Google password, since it's near 40 characters. Never even pop it out otherwise. Software just wins for me.

Also: preordered from Expansys. We shall see what the price ends up being.

    I'm confused about this link:

No 4G? Or do they just not list 4G because they are scared of the tmobile/att merger and don't want to make any promises.

Timeline of the great 4G scam:

    1. Sprint introduces WiMax, calls it 4G.

1a. The UN's ITU, which defines the technical standards for these wireless generations, says WiMax isn't really 4G. It's not 4G because it doesn't adhere to their IMT-Advanced standard.

    2. Verizon announces a transition plan for LTE, calls it 4G. Deployment to begin at the end of 2010.

2a. LTE isn't really 4G because (you guessed it) it doesn't adhere to the ITU's IMT-Advanced spec.

    3. T-Mobile begins deployment of HSPA+ 3G, which offers speeds of up to 21Mbps down.

    4. AT&T announces plans to begin HSPA+ deployment by the end of 2010. BUT WAIT! Isn't Verizon going to LTE at the end of 2010? And doesn't T-Mobile already have HSPA+? Yes. AT&T lags behind T-Mo in 3G technology, and Verizon in next-gen technology! SUCKS FOR THEM.

    5. AT&T finally gets their shit together and starts HSPA+ rollout at the end of 2010.

    6. AT&T starts to feel the hurt from Verizon's iPhone introduction, so they rename their HSPA+ network 4G. Just like that. Their marketers decided to give the 4G moniker to a 3G technology, just because they could.

    7. Poor T-Mobile has no access to any "4G" technology, because their towers are not WiMax-compatible, and they could not afford to buy any wireless spectrum for an LTE deployment. They follow AT&T and give the 4G name to HSPA+, too.

    So here's where we stand:
Verizon has LTE. It's a 3.9 technology. Their marketers call it 4G.
    T-Mobile has HSPA+. It's a 3.5G technology. Their marketers call it 4G.
    AT&T has HSPA+. It's a 3.5G technology. Their marketers call it 4G.
Sprint has WiMax. It's a 3.9G technology. Their marketers call it 4G.

None of these will have technologically accurate 4G until they introduce LTE-Advanced (Verizon/AT&T-Mobile) or IEEE 802.16m (Sprint). Now, just how fast will a true 4G network be? Try this on for size:

HSPA+ (3G): Up to 42Mbps down, up to 21Mbps typical for North American carriers
    WiMax (3.9G): Up to 6Mbps
    LTE (3.9G): Up to 12Mbps
    LTE-Advanced (4G): Up to 100Mbps
    802.16m (4G): Up to 100Mbps

    Yeeeeah.

It never matters how accurate the OSK is. Swype is awesome, etc.

In the end, I'm just way, way faster and more accurate with a hardware keyboard. Passwords, punctuation, etc.

According to what I've read, HSPA+ is capable of up to 84Mbps in it's most recent revision. Future revisions are supposed to push the speed up to 168 Mbit/s using multiple carriers and up to 672 Mbit/s is proposed for 3GPP Release 11 using advanced antenna techniques.

Not that anyone would ever see those speeds... but for the sake of being TECHNICALLY accurate.

All the figures I've been quoted on there are what carriers have been promising, rather than the theoretical limits. I should have been more clear.

Google translate says "alle klar" for Dutch, but I'm sure that is just as good coming from the man there.
