Bought this in May 2011

And...what I have done.

First off, is I put a 2GB DDR3-1066 RAM stick in. This netbook will support up to 4GB.

Then I removed the thermal pad from the APU, and put some AS5 on the chip between it and the heatsink.

I removed the 4 screws behind the keyboard, so now you can access the bottom panel with ease (hdd, RAM, etc) The bottem panel still snaps in to place easily and securely

I also made recovery DVD's, which are included so you don't have to waste the 30 minutes making them

I played Portal. Yes, this netbook will play games.

It also has HDMI output, and has no issues play a 1080p .mkv output over HDMI to a TV. So, you could easily turn this into a htpc with a nice 2TB external hard drive

Windows 7 starter sucks, but I also ran Ubuntu with no issues.

1280x720 resolution. None of that Intel restricted 1024x600 res. This netbook supports HD resolutions, and the HDMI out will do 1920x1080 movies without issue.

Acer AO522-BZ897

$329 retail

for you, $275 shipped USA.

I know GPU acceleration is all the rage these days, but I'm really surprised the 1GHz processor doesn't still slow the system to a crawl.... that said, I'd buy it if I had the cash.

it's dual core, and today's 1GHz CPU's are a lot faster than back when AMD Thunderbird's were in all our PCs (durons for the cheap folks  )

I wasn't ever fortunate enough to own an AMD T-bird :( I went straight from a 533MHz Celeron to an AthlonXP 1800+ my senior year of high school.

Fun fact: the Intel Atom has approximately the same compute power as an Athlon XP. We've come a long way.
