Still running three times a week for about 7-8 miles a time. I am also on Runkeeper. I'd love to run more, but old legs are only happy with every other day.

I need to get back on it. I started Taekwondo three nights a week (MWF) and running in between would definitely help with my endurance during that.

I'm starting it up again... Got 4 more weeks of P90X2 and then I'll be running full time again (5 days a week)... going for broke this year... I'm posting my runs on Garmin Connect and on my FB page.

My goal is a Tough Mudder this fall. I love running, but I need to augment it with weights, calisthenics, and other activities.

Did you see the TM workout? PDF (they do have weight exercises, but mostly body weight IIRC, leaving work now, so I'm not going to check)

    I saw it, Tush. Thanks.

Okay. I'm partway through the 100 pushups program then going to start TM training. I'm also aiming for a fall TM, but I need to go back to my podiatrist soon

@preacher are you running the TM in the DC area?

Are you talking about that hundredpushups program? The six week deal?

Cool, bro! Looks like something I'd add to the end of my runs. Thanks for the info! Looking forward to seeing pics of you in the TM!

@Annes. Yes. Looking for hot, sexy Icrontians to get even hotter and sexier at the TM. You in?

Just had an interesting weekend of a 12 mile Saturday followed up with an 11 mile Sunday... Last year I never did back to backs but for one 10 mile Sat/Sun and the Sunday run was HARD!! Today's run (Sunday) wasn't too bad at all... first couple miles were a little shaky, but after I got passed two, I was good to go... 9:02 pace throughout on Saturday, 9:03 pace on Sunday...

Given that I'm going to try for my first 50 miler at the end of this year, I'm going to try to do more of these back-to-back weekends hoping to get to where I can punch out 20 miles each day with little to no residual issues... I think if I can do this, plus my typical weekly running (about 20+ miles between Tues, Wed, Thurs) I could probably do the 50 miler with few issues...

Only about 200 days away though...

@LazarusXero So much love to you for trying a 50. Hate you a little for beating me to one but do it and tell us all the details.
  • LazarusXeroLazarusXero Illinois Icrontian
@_k_ You still got about 30 weeks before I get to mine... with what you probably run already, you could be up to a 50 miler (or a 100k) by then easily... Go For It!!!
  • _k_k P-Town, Texas Icrontian
Are you crazy? I am only running 25 miles a week on 5 days.

    Humans can't really outrun horses.

Maybe over "shorter" distances, but I believe a human will win out over longer distances due to the difference in breathing from quadrupeds to bipeds.
  • _k_k P-Town, Texas Icrontian
Only if you mean over hundreds of miles. World record for 100 miles is around 11 hours and 30 minutes, which is on a track. Multi-day races the human would eventually win simply on the fact of exhausting the horse. But comparing them over that kind of distance I consider to be unfair due to the fact that if a horse breaks almost any bone it its body it will most likely die from the injury because their entire skeletal system is designed to support their weight.
  • ardichokeardichoke Icrontian
Soo.... you consider a comparison between two unequal things unfair. Then what is the point of comparison?

That's the point. As far as being able to run indefinitely, humans beat out all other animals as far as I'm aware.
  • RyanFodderRyanFodder Detroit, MI Icrontian
The article expressly says that over long distances (marathon - ultra marathon lengths) humans are better than any other animal because we are the best at cooling our bodies thus preventing exhaustion.
  • _k_k P-Town, Texas Icrontian
But over marathon distances we are not. The man v. horse race has the horses start late and has a required vet check and these times are not removed from the overall. Then if you want to cover farther you can compare the Tevis Cup, the horse race that spawned Western States 100, to the Western States 100 since they are 100 miles and across the same terrain.

The best time on Western states 100 is 14 hours 46 minutes for open male and in 2011 there were 33 horses that ran a faster time alone.
  • RyanFodderRyanFodder Detroit, MI Icrontian
Interesting that the article is so skewed then.

Today I Extrapolated - We don't eat horse meat because we couldn't exhaust them to death as early humans.

There are plenty of countries that eat non-trivial amounts of horse meat. But I get your drift.
