I propose the following adjustment for MMOs based on my experiences:
APB Reloaded: 10 hours recorded by Steam. EQ1 or EQ2: Level 20 (Knight of D'Lere achievement) World of Warcraft: Level 20 or 2 level 10's. (Can't count deleted characters or existing characters.) World of Tanks: 10 hours. The Secret World: Level 10 Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: Level 10 Champions Online: Level 10 No Levels / Free To Play: 10 hours or 10 levels, use your best judgment.
The challenge relates to the Steam Library, so if the game isn't in your Steam games list it doesn't count anyway.
Most of those games aren't on Steam.... so, I'm not sure what they have to do with this competition. It's pretty explicitly stated in most of my OPs that this is about Steam libraries...
We have 32 official "I'm in" participants so far. Many of you have already begun and have been following the rules and posting your thoughts about the games you're playing/suffering through. Thank you to those that have!

I propose the following adjustment for MMOs based on my experiences:
...some stuff that follows the rules... ...a bunch of trying to change the rules for certain games...
I think the gist of what they are trying to tell you is.... your proposal has been rejected.
If it is on your Steam list... beat it if possible or play it for 10 hours if not. It really is that simple. If you don't want to play by the rules, that doesn't mean you should try to change the rules for everyone. Lay out the rules you want to follow in your thread and play. That is the whole idea here, Stop making excuses and complaining and JUST PLAY.
And I don't see why you would discount existing characters anyways (i.e. if WoW happened to be in my Steam, I would not count it because I had an 85 already).

You know, I would love to know what you all are smoking that makes you think this is someone trying to 'not play by the rules.' Seriously.
If we say "10 hours" for MMOs, fine, great. I'll just fire it up and chat with people for 9 hours of it. Or just dawdle so I only see maybe level 6 content. The point of my proposal was to tighten and clarify the rules for people with MMOs in their backlogs, so that there are more specific objectives in tune with the genre rather than just a blanket '10 hours.' Which for many of them, really isn't much time at all for some of them. The point here is to play the games in our backlog and get a real feel for them, is it not? And I was under the impression that the ultimate objective was to 'beat' the games which are beatable. Well, technically many of these are 'beatable' (e.g. APB Reloaded would be max matchmaking level or standing, Champions Online would be level 50, and so on) while others are not (World of Tanks for example). The problem therein is that if we say 'max level,' EQ2 is 92 (95 w/CoE) and 40-60 days to get there. And if we say '10 hours,' that's not even one zone - hardly gives you a feel for the game.
Not only that, but I'd like folks to see it as an incentive and reason to ADD games to their backlog, and to really try out different games without the fear of getting bogged down badly. As I said, there's a whole dearth of free to play and subscription-free MMOs these days. Some of them are quite good - The Secret World, Planetside 2, EQ2 - and right there on Steam.

Excellent. Glad we worked that out.

Hm. So far this competition has gotten me drunk AND laid. If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right.
According to the media after finishing our backlogs we should all be raging gun-toting killers.
And they might be right, but for much different reasons
Can you imagine if video games really did affect our behavior?
"Terin, why are you flying from place to place smashing random boxes and piles of rubble with that impressive hammer whose material and strength you seem to upgrade periodically?"
"Gee, I don't know. It just seemed like the thing to do."
My first three games: 1...2...3...KICK IT, AaaAaaaAaAAAA, and its sequel mean I would suddenly start jumping off of extremely high places, occasionally listening to awesome music on the way down.
...maybe I should figure out how to have a soft landing...

So here is my less than 10 hour list. Though Portal I beat in like 3 so.... I guess I must play some challenge levels.

If you complete the game, you are done. You don't have to replay up to 10 hours. The 10 hours rule is ONLY for games that do not have any sort of ending.

I then see this. Guess I know how I'll be deciding what game to play first. Count me in.
Everquest 2, APB Reloaded, Planetside 2, Eve Online, The Secret World, you get the idea.
The Steam Store even has an entire category dedicated to MMOs.
