For an air cooler I'd recommend the Noctua NH-D15 if your budget allows.

That's a bit overkill if there isn't any overclocking being done.

You're telling me everyone doesn't overclock? Madness.

So this plus some thermal paste? Does it matter what thermal paste I get?

I've always gone with Arctic Silver 5. Just get a tiny tube.

  • Make sure you have a motherboard with a rear cutout that will allow you to access the backplate. If not, get the GAMMAXX 300. CoolerMaster packages their coolers with some paste. You don't need to purchase Arctic Silver on top of it.

Oh, I don't know that I have a cut out in my mobo.

You don't. He was referring to the metal tray that the motherboard attaches to inside the case.

So the issue is that the heatsink is too heavy to attach to my CPU without a bracket attaching it to the mobo, right? Are there any heatsinks I can use that are decent and don't have that problem?

Most of the ones I know about use backplates, but here is one that is from a nice fan company and is toolless.

  • The one that I suggested the first time. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835856006

Uses a standard AMD Clip. Extremely quiet. Should not interfere with RAM. Performs reasonably well. Not priced out of the park. I use these on AMD builds all the time.
